A letter to the editor, in this week's St. Louis Post Dispatch, written by Mary Schaefer, Executive Director of the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging, sheds some light on the hard truths that our seniors are facing today.

"One in three seniors struggles to meet the most basic needs of adequate food, medicine, affordable housing and accessible transportation."

Budget cut considerations threaten the ability of our seniors to age in place which, many times, preserves the dignity and livelihood of our seniors, and also happens to be the most cost-effective situation for Missouri taxpayers.

There is plenty that you can do - donate your time, talent and treasure to help what Mary describes as what is becoming Missouri's hidden poor.

Visit the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging's website to learn about the various volunteer, donor and sponsorship opportunities that MEAAA offers members of our communities.

Christine took her clients and staff to an amazing performance by the Women's HOPE Chorale of St. Louis and the Cortango Orquesta at the Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries last night. The music and dancing was awe inspiring and enjoyed by all.

This post is quite apropos on this International Women's Day because the mission of the Women's HOPE Chorale of St. Louis is to give the community excellent music and join with organizations that share its values of hope and optimism for women. The Chorale often performs gratis at events designed to raise funds for women’s issues and uses its university connection to provide educational opportunities for emerging musician leaders.

For those who work with people who are elderly or have friends or family members who are elderly, please take a moment to scan this article, put out by the National Council on Aging, which outlines the three most popular scams targeting seniors. Our office has personally dealt with some of these fraudulent communications. These scams are definitely things to be aware of so that you can assist those who may be vulnerable.

The #SpecialNeedsTrust Fairness Act, as part of H.B. 34, the 21st Century Cures, was passed this week with bipartisan support. This Act will allow a person who has special needs to sign his or her own first-party special needs #trust. Previously, only a parent, grandparent, guardian or court could establish such a trust for the #beneficiary. This Act corrects an error in the law that presumes that all persons with #disabilities lack the mental capacity to handle their own affairs. This is a significant milestone for people who have #specialneeds and those who advocate for them. This will change the way some special needs trusts are drafted and administered.

Joette Martin is our probate paralegal here at the firm. Her husband, Bear, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year. Joette is a marvelous paralegal and one of her most endearing qualities is the manner in which she interacts with our clients. She comforts the people that we serve with her calm and understanding nature. Her demeanor truly strikes a chord with each and every client. Joette was recently asked to share her story with the Alzheimer’s Association. Please take a moment to read about Joette’s experience here. We are very grateful that Joette is a part of this firm.

Christine's firm has long advocated for the organization, The Mid-East Area Agency on Aging, and the wonderful work that they do for our local, aging communities. KSDK just featured a story yesterday on the Meals on Wheels program that MEAAA provides and how it impacts the volunteers just as much as the people who are being served. This holiday season, consider volunteering with the MEAAA or making a contribution to its foundation. Both are great ways to give back this time of year.
