Some of the choir members are in casual black clothing because they had just finished singing "Bohemian Rhapsody." Check that out on my channel, too. Good stuff!

Proud of my boy Matt, AKA Elder Price, and all the great kids in this student-directed scene from Book of Mormon.

+Douglas Love, since we were talking about MT programs, here's a video from this week's "Senior Scenes" at Matt's school. Matt is playing Elder Price in this 15-minute scene. They put these together in about three weeks with student directors. I think the kids do a good job! They have a blast doing this.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on college musical-theater programs. Matt, who will be a senior next year, is considering MT as his major, but he also wants to attend a large university where he can take lots of classes outside the major. We are researching schools, visiting schools, etc. If you have experience with this, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

If you're a freelance writer and you're not following +Michelle Rafter here and reading her blog, you're missing out. Whenever I stop by her blog, I learn something new and helpful. Like this.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about colleges that might be a good fit for someone interested in both engineering and musical theater. (Quite the combo, huh?) And also, what do you think of the prospect of going after a double major? Thanks in advance for sharing.

Douglas, thanks so much for this. And thanks to Eric! We are actually planning to visit Carnegie Mellon this summer and will be checking out their musical theater program. Very competitive school and program. But all of the good ones seem to be quite competitive. Hundreds of (sometimes several thousand) applicants, and most programs seem to take about 10 guys and 10 girls. Some are larger, like NYU/Tisch. Would like to learn more about that program. But NYU is SO expensive. A lot to think about here before Matt finalizes his college list this fall. Thanks again.

Introduction

I can’t think of another career in which I’d be paid to:

  • Lose 15 pounds in front of millions of womansday.com readers.
  • Strap on skates for a three-day in-line skating camp in Lanesboro, Minnesota and write about it for Shape magazine. (Yes, the mosquitoes were the size of VW bugs.)
  • Interview automotive technicians, fashion experts, firefighters, homeowners, bankers — and talk with two different actors who’ve kissed Brooke Shields.

I’ve been a full-time freelance writer for the past 19 years. I received a journalism degree, with a minor in advertising, from Arizona State University. For consumer pubs, I’ve covered lifestyle, automotive, parenting, social-media, women’s and health topics in addition to writing profiles and personal essays. I’ve received the Parenting Publications of America Silver Award for excellence in health reporting and I’m a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

My articles and essays have appeared in Newsweek (“My Turn”), USA Today, Woman’s Day, Family Circle, AARP the Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Shape, Chicago Tribune, Child, Weight Watchers Magazine and many other publications. My work also has been distributed through The New York Times Syndicate and Tribune Media. In addition, I represented Consumer Reports on Twitter for two and a half years as their social-media reporter.

My custom-publishing work includes writing for Time Inc. Content Solutions (Ford, Unilever); Campbell Ewald (OnStar, Carrier, AC Delco); King Fish Media (Albertsons); Nissan (Tech Talk, an in-house magazine for technicians) and Healthspring Communications (Every Woman magazine). In addition, I edit health newsletters for Health Media Concepts (AmerisourceBergen, McKesson).

I live in the Los Angeles area with my husband, our 16-year-old son and Charlie the rescue dog. My son recently completed driver’s training, and I lived to tell the tale. It’s all fodder for another article, no doubt.

I’d love to hear from you! Please drop me a note at kathy@kathysena.com.

Mark has taken headshots for me on the streets on NYC twice when I was there for a conference for the American Society of Journalists and Authors. I loved the finished headshots — and I had a blast! Mark has a great way with people and he will make you feel comfortable, even while being photographed on a Midtown sidewalk with taxis and people streaming by. In fact, that environment made for great shots! He also does amazing studio work, of course. I can't recommend Mark highly enough!
