After 3 months of driving with the Bell Insurance Telematics device, I finally got the email that tells me that I'm a safe enough driver to get a discount. Text from the email:

Congratulations! You have reached your Plug and Drive 3 month review point, and based on your driving scores over the last 3 months, you have been awarded extra discount! As a result, your policy premium has been reduced by £Insert your text here.

It's like the old "Hello $first_name" problem, but with a distinctly British twist.

I decided to "try something new" in June and went down the route of making a web app in a language/framework with which I wasn't already comfortable. I'm pretty solid on Python, PHP and a bit of Java, so I jumped completely feet-first into Ruby on Rails (after being a bit scared off by Node). The past weeks have been full of confusion around simple syntax, frustration in taking a day to do something that would take me a minute in Django, and several exclamations of "Fascists!" when failing to do things the "right way" in Rails. I think I am making progress.

Since leaving Google, it's been awhile since I've had the chance to babble nonsensically to a room full of people. So I'm making up for it by speaking at ProductTank London on "How to Screw Up B2B Product Management". If you can be at Old Street next Wednesday at 6:30 or so, come by! http://www.meetup.com/ProductTank/events/161076312/

The US has finally discovered chip and pin. Just around the time when I have become annoyed by transactions that don't have tap-to-pay and have to fall back to chip and pin. What are all those American experts in signature comparison analysis going to do if they are no longer needed to work in the shops?

"There will be travel ambassadors at stations helping with alternative routes." OOOOHHH!!!! That sounds like a fun job! I enjoy having abuse hurled at me for something that isn't my fault. Where do I sign up?

Concluding an emotional trip to the Googleplex to tell the team that I am switching products at Google and am leaving Google Analytics. I love GA, but am looking forward to my next challenge in Google Compare!

Here's what I did during Christmas vacation:

If you used the Insanity Mac app from 1992, you might like this. Basically let's you shoot holes in web pages. Good for use on poorly designed sites, annoying emails or confusing technical documents.
