READING, WRITING, AND LEARNING

When I turned eight, I began to read in earnest.

Reading and absorbing the first novels, written for adults, I thought---I CAN DO THIS.

Reading became an escape and as important as air and every book I could get my hands on, I consumed.

All those minds explored by simply reading what thoughts, life experiences, and knowledge they labored to get into print. All of it there for the taking in the school library, in the town library, and from books gifted, and purchased.

With that stimulation the stories in my head expanded and came and went like clouds drifting endlessly above.

For the next ten years I mostly ignored the stories that roamed in my head and it pained me to do so. I should have written them down and they died because I did not.

Day after day, story after story appeared in great detail and one by one my imagination and knowledge filled in the spaces and embellished.

Currently, there are over five hundred manuscripts that I have written from age eighteen to the present (my seventh decade) and one way or another, I intend the laborious task of editing each of those manuscripts and sending them off to the publishers to be put in print. (It is taking longer than I thought).

SOMEHOW I WILL GET THIS DONE, OR DIE TRYING!

It grieves my soul to understand that the majority of people in this country can't even name a book title or author they have read in the last ten years.

We are becoming a country of illiterates, a people that pursue illusion rather than reality. A people who are easily persuaded by endless nonsense spread over the airways that form the patterns and belief systems of so many lives.

Education in its many forms should never stop but continue onto death.

Please, if you can, read a book, any book that informs and is uplifting.

Life is like a rolling fog, a cloudy mist that obscures and makes vision difficult but at times there are brief moments when the cloud drifts away allowing clear glimpses of what is before you.

PIONEER VILLAGE, NEBRASKA
RESEARCHING, TAKING NOTES FOR FUTURE BOOKS!

Here I am at Harold Warp's PIONEER VILLAGE in Nebraska, where the largest collection of WESTERN WAGONS I have ever seen are displayed. A rich man's dream realized and now a non-profit museum.

That's me in the picture next to a 3000 pound CONCORD COACH.

A writer has to do his research, write quality stories, and establish a certain amount of gravitas, before one can sell a million books!

SIX-GUNS and SLAY BELLS: A CREEPY COWBOY CHRISTMAS in a Barnes & Noble Bookstore, Las Vegas, Nevada!

CONGRATULATIONS Livia J. Washburn/Reasoner for the hard work of assembling writers and publishing this ANTHOLOGY under the name of WESTERN FICTIONEERS!

Congratulations authors: Robert J. Randisi, James Reasoner, Troy D. Smith, Larry D. Sweazy, L.J. (Livia J.) Washburn, C Courtney Joyner, Chuck Tyrell, Matthew P. Mayo, Douglas Hirt, Clay More, Cheryl Pierson, James J. Griffin, Christine Matthews, Jerry Guin, and Charlie Steel.

You are all now officially on a book shelf in a Brick and Mortar store in one of the wildest if not the wildest commercial gambling Meccas in the Northern Hemisphere of the America’s!

Here’s the story: While on a road trip through the west I stopped in Vegas to win a little money and have a little fun. Always having my eye out for a book store, while stopping for food, I saw a Barnes & Noble. Wandering in, I headed for the WESTERNS section and found one book by Johnny D. Boggs, nearly an entire shelf of Ralph Compton and Ralph Cotton books, three shelves of William Johnstone, three shelves of Louis L’Amour, some Elmer Kelton’s and Dusty Richards, and the book you see above, SIX-GUNS AND SLAY BELLS: A CREEPY COWBOY CHRISTMAS!

A friendly Barnes & Noble clerk was kind enough to take the picture of the book and the old guy holding the book up: Author Charlie Steel, himself!

To help promote this gem of a book and the authors involved, you will find this article on Facebook and shared to each of the writers.

Congratulations again, you are now in Las Vegas, Nevada (your story) sitting on a book shelf waiting to be purchased, read, and savored!

Found at: Barnes & Noble & https://www.amazon.com/Six-guns-Slay-Bells-Creepy-Christmas-ebook/dp/B009V7F986/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

ON THE SERIOUS SIDE: Promising myself not to write anything political, this is more in the area of a treatise on sociological factors and poor children in the USA.

TODAY I WAS CONFRONTED WITH THE QUESTION ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE POOREST IN OUR COUNTRY, AND WHY SO MUCH UNHAPPINESS AND VILOLANCE IN THE USA? THIS WAS MY RESPONSE:

A family cannot survive without proper income and benefits. They just cannot purchase the items needed for a proper and happy home life. This does not come from laziness, but rather from ability and opportunity.

As a past Child Protection Worker, dealing with thousands upon thousands of cases, lack of income was the primary factor in abuse and neglect.

Imagine no income or very little income. Imagine improper diet and a child is carried in the womb, sometimes exposed to alcohol or drugs. An impaired or drug addicted child may be born. That child stays in the hospital in pre-natal care and perhaps costing the state millions.

The child is released to the same environment where it was conceived. It may or may not have a home, moves from relative to relative, lives in a car, or a cardboard box. The child is not properly cared for, is not picked up, has a bald spot in the back of its head, suffers poor diet, and those who survive face other dangers.

As the infant grows, there is further poor diet, poor hygiene, lack of proper clothing, living in squalor, very little if any proper medical care, lack of supervision, many children falling out windows etc., to have further developmental impairment. Such children worry about survival and not learning. Many unsupervised children get involved in risky and criminal behavior and early sexual activity.

Such individuals grow up, a miracle they survived. Many are incapable of contributing to society and they repeat the cycle.

THIS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and from my experience, it is getting worse. With future robots and smart computers, job after job will be lost. With removal of health care, food programs, early education and after school programs, it can only get worse. It is well documented that 42 million people suffer daily from food shortages. A society that doesn't take care of its children is incapable of taking care of itself and the millions who live like this will only increase.

There are so many street people and homeless children in the USA that Child Protection has become a joke, as there are no resources to handle this many children.

Unemployment, low income families, and the homeless population are increasing and it looks like it will grow exponentially.

For those who have a hard time believing this, it is a fact that more than 70% of us are one paycheck away from disaster...

What happens to the least of us, WILL EVENTUALLY EFFECT AND HAPPEN TO ALL OF US!

So says Charlie Steel, Author & PhD

OH HOW I WISH SUMMER WOULD COME SO I CAN ROAD TRIP TO MICHIGAN AND GO SAILING, SNORKELING, AND FISHING!

Several years ago I sailed a 45' Columbia Sloop from New Jersey, up the coast into the Hudson. Going past the Statue of Liberty and dealing with all those freighters was exciting and scary.

I then went through the 32 lockes to Lake Erie. Heading north I went up into the Detroit River and then on to Lake Huron. It was so hard dealing with the big ships, they will run you down without hesitation.

I was surprised the Detroit River was no longer BROWN but an azure blue. Still, I knew pollution permeated the waters of the Great Lakes, like Mercury, Lead, PCB's, etc.

In Michigan the corporations poured toxic material into streams and then into the Great Lakes. Some cities like Flint (for years and years) poured sewage into the FLINT RIVER along with disintegrated toilet paper. And because of a crooked government who clearly didn't care about people but only business, FORCED residents to drink that water~!

I wanted to sail around the world but quickly discovered how dangerous sailing was. First there were pirates, dangerous governments, larger ships, the danger of whales, and upon return the constant harassment and checks by the Coast Guard. (Once stopped by the Coast Guard three times in one day!)

I sold the Columbia 45' and now only sail in a 27' foot Pearson around Lake Huron.

GOD must help sailors because they seldom realize just how dangerous it is, including instant squalls and storms, high waves, and 75 mile hour winds which can appear instantly.

Despite the hidden but ever present pollution, the GREAT LAKES are beauty beyond belief. Ohhhhhh, SUMMER, please come.

(And...I pray to GOD I am healthy enough to do it).
