Some interesting numbers on the size and scale of Google's code base in this recent paper out of Google: "Google’s code repository has over 100 million lines of code. With over 15,000 programmers, the code base is growing rapidly. Half of the code base changes every month ... The Google code repository receives over 5,500 code changes per day, which make the CI system run over 100 million test cases per day ...  more compute resources to... is not sufficient to keep up."

Great move and, I hope, part of a broad trend: "Starting in January 2017, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will require all of the researchers it funds to publish in journals that are free for the public to read"

Six scholarships were awarded this year from Monica's Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund to study wildlife ecology and conservation at the +University of Florida . The funds come out of the interest from the endowment so that these scholarships can be awarded each year in perpetuity to further Monica's passion of supporting conservation and the environment. The total endowment is over $149,000 currently, and scholarships have been given to 19 students over the last 5 years. Thank you for your continued support and Rest in Peace, Monica.

Using computational photography to take better pictures

As anybody who has tried to use a smartphone to photograph a dimly lit scene knows, the resulting pictures are often blurry or noisy. Equally frustrating are scenes where there is a large range of brightness levels, such as a family photo backlit by a bright sky; photographs will either come out with an overexposed sky (turning it white) or an underexposed family (turning them into silhouettes).

HDR+ is a feature in the Google Camera app for Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 that uses computational photography to help you take better pictures in these common situations. Learn how on the Research blog, linked below.

If President Obama really wanted to spread Sharia law in the U.S., he'd be a Republican!
