As the United States of America, France, Saudi Arabia, and other's bomb the Islamic State in Syria, there is one thing that has been forgotten: there is already an army with boot on the ground in Syria, that could not only defeat ISIL but also rid the region of it. Yet the United States will not work with this army or it's commander. It is the Syrian Army and the leader of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, the strong arm ruler of Syria.
Many American's may not be able to stomach the thought of working with al-Assad, but he is our best bet. The United States makes deals with devils all the time across the world. Why not with Syria? That may have more to do with conceding that Iran now is the power broker in the region, which America isn't willing to do. In the case of defeating ISIL, it is a deal with the devil we should make. Why should we make such a deal, you ask? We make the deal in order to meet the goal of stabilizing Iraq. It will not be the unified, pie in the sky Iraq, but one that is divided amongst Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds.
The way to get that stabilization is via al-Assad and his boots on the ground. We, alone, can not bomb ISIL out of existence or power. Time to make that deal with the known devil. For al-Assad could end this and the civil war in his country if we would just stay out of it. Remember in certain parts of the world it takes a strong arm man/woman to keep things in check, internally, so those things do not spill out to the world. We just need to be able to stomach the collateral damage that will have to be extracted in order, for such a deal to work.
