Hi members and prospective members.

Just a heads up, in case you weren't aware, but Google will (in it's "infinite wisdom") be shutting down Google+ in April 2019.

Treating violent crime as a public health issue. This was surfaced for me by +Greg Ellifritz on his blog. Doesn't look like he's active on G+, but he's a US policeman, a police trainer and a self-defence trainer. (President of Active Response Training.)

Have read a lot of his stuff over the last year or so, and I have a suspicion that if the US (and the world in fact) had more cops like this, it would be a better place.

:D For anybody who loved the old Sierra games, and especially the classic (and still awesome) Quest For Glory series, then this should be a no-brainer.

A spiritual successor to the series, by Corey and Lori Cole, the original games creators, the first instalment of the Hero-U series, Rogue To Redemption is on the verge of release. Can't wait. :D

Interesting study on how the design and implementation of privacy settings is intended to subtly encourage users toward less private selections or discourage them from selecting more privacy-centric options. Courtesy of +Edward Morbius
Report: Deceived by design: How tech companies use dark patterns to discourage us from exercising our rights to privacy

In this report, we analyze a sample of settings in Facebook, Google and Windows 10, and show how default settings and dark patterns, techniques and features of interface design meant to manipulate users, are used to nudge users towards privacy intrusive options.

The findings include privacy intrusive default settings, misleading wording, giving users an illusion of control, hiding away privacy-friendly choices, take-it-or-leave-it choices, and choice architectures where choosing the privacy friendly option requires more effort for the users.
