"That is why Wikipedia played such a critical role: unlike all the other major sites that shut down. Wikipedia is not a company; Wikipedia, for this purpose, functioned as a mini-democracy within a democracy, where people who continuously volunteer for the public good came together to do something new for the public. Wikipedia represents a moral force that no commercial site can ever hope to replicate."

Not sure I've shared this before, so in case I haven't: this is a quick presentation I made in five minutes during WikiSym 2011, to answer a question from the audience: "Is there anything left to write about on the English Wikipedia?"

Please feel free to copy, share, translate, localize, etc.

Indeed, and I'm glad you find it clear and succinct. Someone with some design talent should maybe take the idea and make it more appealing, and then maybe different community members can riff off that better-designed one and adapt some of the examples to their local/language contexts.

The prophet Mathias :)

(the final, parenthesized sentence in his post means: "I feel [my view] validated by the SOPA protest")
Mathias Schindler originally shared:

In Haifa auf der Wikimania gesagt: "Traditionally, the Music and Film Industry of America and other organisations are perceived as powerful, as influential, but - and this is highly speculative, I really want your opposition on this one - but it is my impression that these organisations wouldn't survive the moment when copyright becomes a national debate, when copyright is discussed the same way as, uhm, tax reform, as social security, as health care, as any other big topic in your national country because these are so isolated groups that go behind the desires and the requirements of most of the other parties involved that they wouldn't be able to continue their holy war on restrictive copyright."

(ich fühle mich durch die SOPA-Proteste validiert)
