Is your union good for you?
Bonneau Says: Is Unionization Good For #Faculty?

"It seems to me that there are two key questions that need to be answered when evaluating whether one should support unionization: (1) is unionization good for the faculty in general, and (2) is unionization good for me as a faculty member. Separating these two questions seems especially important given the range of duties and responsibilities of different faculty members."

Chris's latest Profology column explains why reading thousands of essays with a diverse group of hundreds of teachers is actually worthwhile and fun.

"Like many college professors, I had zero classes that taught me how to teach, write exams, grade reliably, or anything having to do with effective classroom instruction. Looking at how good exam questions are worded has significantly improved my ability to write fair exam questions for my students as well as grade them consistently."

#Faculty, the latest #academic_freedom disputes compel Chris to continues his examination of academic freedom across the U.S. What's happening at your school?

"These codes  state that certain lines of inquiry, certain viewpoints, certain  conclusions are forbidden at the institution. When a scholar decides to  work at a place like this, he/she is giving up his/her rights to academic freedom."

#Faculty, how do you encourage students to take your courses?

"The teaching assistant claimed that Maillo was angry that she was dating a student at the University of Massachusetts and told her and other teaching assistants to go to parties with students and sleep with them to encourage them to take Spanish. ” - By Susan Svrluga December 29 - Washington Post

‪#‎Faculty‬, are you a subject of "pampered student emperors"?

"Universities are reaping the whirlwind of two decades of child-centred education. That whirlwind has imported imbecilic trigger warnings – when academics have to warn students that western European literature, from the Iliad on, is full of sex and violence. It has also brought the pernicious idea of 'no-platforming' – when students refuse to give a stage to anyone who doesn’t fit with their narrow view of the world ." - Harry Mount - The Telegraph - 29 Dec 2015

‪#‎Faculty‬, join Profology and NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) for the latest free ‪#‎webinar‬ in our Professional Development Series:

Coaching for First-Generation College Students:
Unifying Students to Appreciate Diversity https://shop.nisod.org/webinar-series/register.php?id=26&code=9138257013822823169

With the recent incidences of intolerance, misunderstanding, and violence on college campuses and in some communities, the first-generation-to-college movement is a way to heal, connect, and rebuild leadership and a diverse, valued student body from the ground up. During this webinar, participants explore current issues, ways that colleges can organize themselves to unify diverse people, and how a culture of coaching can break down even the most hardened walls to get students and faculty to understand and appreciate each other. Participants gain a practical sense of what they can do to be part of a solution that draws on the gifts, talents, and abilities of all people regardless of their backgrounds. The webinar facilitator has over 25 years of higher education experience and an extensive background in college readiness, admissions, graduation, career planning, and personal and career coaching.

#‎Faculty‬, it's from The Onion, but could it be real?

‪#‎Adjunct‬ ‪#‎faculty‬, are tenured colleagues allies or enemies?

"And then things got just plain ugly. Adjuncts like me were seen by administrators and tenure faculty alike as enjoying too many perks, and a campaign was launched to 'put them back in their places.” - Why the backlash against adjuncts is an indictment of the tenure system BY DENISE CUMMINS August 29, 2014 at 12:29 PM EST

#Community_college‬ ‪#faculty‬, do you have homeless students?

"Just over half of students surveyed also said they had experienced some form of housing insecurity in the past year, whether it was “difficulty paying rent,' 'didn’t pay full amount of rent/utilities' or, among others, 'moved in with another person due to financial problems.” - December 7, 2015 By Josh Logue - Inside HigherEd
