I thought the non-directionality of Apple's Lightning connector was a step in the right direction. Guess not?
Samsung's Galaxy Note III is going to be the first phone on the market to feature a micro USB 3.0 connector. As The Verge notes, there are many obvious benefits to the new USB standard, the most important of which being the ability to draw 900 milliamps of current when connected to a computer versus

I was rather annoyed that I had to pick up one of those things for a portable backup HDD that I purchased some months ago.  Those cables were gods-awful, much like any other USB cable.  I can understand going with that sort of form factor with phones and such.  As much as I prefer non-directional cables like Lightening, or some Firewire cables, for small devices, I can understand having to change one end for something thin like a phone.

This week, as I was preparing my presentation on C# sung on iOS and Android, I came to the realization that callback-based programming has somehow become an acceptable programming model. It has become an acceptable programming model, in the same way that using IF/GOTO to write programs was an ...

“Engelbart had an intent, a goal, a mission. He stated it clearly and in depth. He intended to augment human intellect. He intended to boost collective intelligence and enable knowledge workers to think in powerful new ways, to collectively solve urgent global problems.”
A few words on Doug Engelbart. Bret Victor / July 3, 2013. Doug Engelbart died today. His work has always been very difficult for writers to interpret and explain. Technology writers, in particular, tend to miss the point miserably, because they see everything as a technology problem.

Simply brilliant.  And it was one of the few things I have seen where I actually could read the comments and frequently chuckle instead of wanting to punch holes through walls… or feeling my IQ drop.

“Chaos Computer Club breaks Apple TouchID”

Yes, but anyone who cracks the thumbprint can also crack into the iPhone without the thumbprint. This at least prevents ordinary people from acquiring access to your facebook and posting prank messages.

Good thing I didn't bet on that, since I would have lost money.  I would have thought it'd take another two or three days to crack.

“To my daughter's high school programming teacher”

Read the main article, then the updates. Heart-wrenching.
Update 2 (wherein my daughter chimes in): As I said, my daughter is in India for a year, so she didn't see this article until Wednesday, September 11. I wasn't sure how she'd feel about me sharing her story and all the attention it received. Luckily, my daughter thanked me for writing about her ...

Yeah, it is, and that sort of thing is what really seems to push women away from tech.  Even the college tech classes I took were heavily skewed towards the male demographic, and there were almost no younger women... The few women in the class tended to be older, and professionals who were simply trying to keep their skill-sets current.

I really hope that one of these days zombie Grace Hopper comes to shove a fist full of nanoseconds down the throat of the guys making the "make me a sandwich" comments.

Edit: And VB?!  That is a capital crime right there.
