HOORAY FOR DEATH! -- my cheerful new book! -- will be officially released in early January, if I can only find a good spot in Portland to show some slides and read a story. Are there any death-themed artshows opening on First Thursday that want to pair up with me? Warm indoor cemeteries equipped with electricity? Living rooms that enjoy hosting snarky literary events?

It's 2013: do RSS readers still exist?  I've got to get Facebook out of my face ...

feedly works for me! I tried doing some evernote witchery and also netvibes, but eh. I don't use mobile, though,  read almost all text and I like to navigate with the keyboard. I guess The Old Reader is pretty much as close to google reader as you can get? It kept timing out when I was trying to import my greader feeds, so I took the easy way out.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: SNAZZY PORTLAND: The Movie For Telephones!  Culminating three years of intermittent volunteer labor, this video is a paean to the song of the same name, dedicated to the eponymous city and the people who make it snazzy!

I have a friend who's looking for a web developer team, probably RonR, to implement his monster internet tv killer dream app. He's a good guy, very smart and easy to work with. Fling resumes and business cards in this direction, please.

"Amelia Davis" has me in her "circles". Her posts are 90% reposts of popular images and 10% links to online stores. She's added 4333 people. Her online profile is empty.

Google Plus keeps nagging me to hang out with her. But I think she's a robot. Not that I hold that against a person. But I'm all about conversation, and robots sometimes come across a bit metallic. She's engineered to generate sales with simulated authentic enthusiasm. She's all "online jewelry!" I'm all "boobs?" I don't think it'd work out.

But it makes me wonder ... who else on here is a robot? Are you certain none of your plusbook friends are robots? How prevalent is this robots-friending-you business? Are there lonely people with entire social networks of only robots?

Since I posted this I've identified a couple of bot-friends on Facebook. I guess I assumed they're fans who want to hear from me. Color me robo-vain. But I now realize this sort of thing is really easy to do. I wonder how long it'll be before a US politician creates an army of robo-supporters to canvas for them?

Many of my Bizarro writers friends are circulating this gem. It's an honest statement; the lot of the self-promoting small author is immensely improved by such stuff. But it just feels, I don't know, impermissibly rude and desperate to send my friends such reminders on how they can advance my career for me. Like they don't have careers of their own to advance, or plenty of other things to talk about in their water cooler conversations, or other shit to do.

What do you all think? Does this provoke an "ugh" reaction? Or am I shooting myself in the foot by not circulating it on the FacePlace?
An author is required to do increasingly more to help a publisher market and publicize a book and this is where you – as a friend or family member-- can really help out. Here are seven ways that you c...

Good!
I'm mulling other locations / second choices..
These are reasonable:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/wandering-goat-coffee-co-eugene
http://www.cozmicpizza.com/

Slightly odd-er options:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/museum-of-unfine-art-and-record-store-eugene
http://www.yelp.com/biz/cowfish-eugene
both of these two are owned by the same guy, who is a pal of some years.
He's had my art shown, etc.

Let's yak as plans take form..

I just bit the bullet and closed my LinkedIn account for good. I've never seen the point of it, and I still don't. I couldn't even ignore them properly, because their weekly digest of useless mgtspeak can't be turned off in the preferences.

LinkedIn: Friendster for the unemployed.

A poor substitute for a resume, you say? My resumes lately are generally much my LinkedIn work history. Cover letters, on the other hand, are another story.

I hear conflicting things about cover letters. Sometimes I hear they're the only thing worth looking at. Other times I hear that they only get thrown away on the way to looking at the resume.

(Maybe that is a good filter for which sorts of places I'd rather work for?)

As for LinkedIn, though. I do get hits there from time to time. From recruiters. I can't say I've ever gotten something through the intended use of the LinkedIn network.
