"You Can Make A Difference!"

Many people believe that they don’t have what it takes to make a difference to the world. They believe only people like Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates are capable of making a difference.
The truth, however is, every one of us is put in this world to contribute and make a difference to the world in our own unique way. Here is a story I came across that I found worth sharing.
There was a wise man who used to go to his beach house often the ocean to do his writing peacefully facing ocean. He used to get up early in the morning well before the dawn to take a walk on the beach every day before he began his work.
One day, as he was standing along the shore, he felt like somebody was dancing at the beach far away from him. Curious to find who would dance there, he walked faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he noticed that thousands of starfish had been washed out at the beach and this young girl was reaching down to the shore, picking a starfish in her little hands and throwing them back into the ocean.
He came closer and asked, "Good morning! What it is that you are doing young lady?"
The girl paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this the girl replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die."
Upon hearing this, the wise man said, "But dear, there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile. What difference you can possibly make here?”
As if she hadn’t heard, the young girl bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, she turned, smiled and said, "I made a difference to that one!" …and then she continued picking up the next one.
The wise man, upset with this reply, paused for a while and returned. For some time, he was upset as he felt the girl was disrespectful. But soon he realized that he just learnt something very valuable from that little girl.
Next morning, there were two people picking up the starfish at the shore – the girl and the wise man!
Mahatma Gandhi is known for having revolutionized an entire nation to fight for independence from the British. He is known as one of the greatest leaders world has ever seen. However, when he started fighting for the cause, he didn't have too many people support him in the beginning. He started it all alone, determined to make a difference.
A man who was fighting against the mighty powers of British during those days, one can only imagine how many challenges he might have gone through. But he never gave up and went on to win hearts of all Indians who later regarded him 'Father of the Nation! He summarized his struggle in his own words, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
His also said, "We must be the change we want to see in the world." He truly lived these principles and set an incredible example for us to follow if we wish to make a difference.
Many times, we get discouraged by other people who try to belittle our dreams because they think it's not possible. They are not necessarily bad people, but like the old man in the starfish story, they may not understand the value right away.
No contribution is too small. Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something and that can make a big difference. If you have a dream, if you know what you are doing and you are working hard, kudos to you! You are already making a difference. Be proud of yourself and never let anybody steal your dream.
However, if you are not sure what difference you can make anyway (like I was in the beginning of my journey), I want you to know that your life has a purpose. You are here for a reason. Start taking baby steps and you will be amazed to discover what you are capable of. This post is for you to know that "You Can Make A Difference!"
