Midway Electric, Inc. is so proud to be a Partner in Education with Midway Heights Elementary School in Columbia, MO. This elementary school is where +Michele Spry
attended as a youngster! Since 2008, when we became a PIE we have been working with the teachers and staff to find ways to help out. Along with our other PIE, D&H Drugstore, we created a read-a-thon. This year is our 3rd Annual Read-A-Thon and our theme this year is "Once Upon A Time". With this theme we are taking things back to the classic fairytales that the kiddos don't often hear anymore. You know the "oldies but goodies" like Jack and the Beanstalk, Puss in Boots, Cinderella and Snow White to name a few.
We have started our week long read-a-thon on Monday April 30th and will go until Friday May 4th. During this time we have signed up almost 70 guest readers that come into our school and read to a classroom. With 13 classrooms total we have at least one and sometimes 2 or 3 guest readers read to our students each day. The kiddos love it and it's so funny to hear them say "Mrs. Spry, Mrs. Spry who will be reading to our classroom today?" They get super excited and all the hard work that goes into this week makes it all worth it because of those adorable smiling faces! It's a great way to get community members and leaders (such as our Mayor, Police Department, Fire Department and local businesses) in front of the kids.
Prior to this week we did a reading challenge. We asked all 306 students to read at least 200 minutes or more and try to get a pledge of $25 for reading. The packets have been flying back in and today is the final day to turn all reading minutes and money in. What are we going to do with the money? All money raised will 100% go for technology (iPads and/or Net books) in our classrooms. We want the kiddos to have technology readily available to them therefore we have had to come up with creative ways to do this. We have also applied for a grant as well. As Partner in Education we are also putting money in to supply these items. We want our students to be on the front side of technology as they move forward in their education. We are so lucky to be a part of a great little country school and we are working hard to help bridge the literacy gap.... one student at a time.
I'll post some reading pictures soon! Have a great day!
