G.P. Telemann, 5 Quartets with Viola da Gamba

VistaMare Musica just released the edition of the 5 Quartets with viola da gamba not included in Telemann’s own publications (namely the Quadri, 1730 and the Nouveaux Quatuors, 1737).

Transcribed from five manuscripts in the Universität- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt, they are grouped in three volumes, according to the instruments:

Vol. I: I, for flute, vdg, bassoon & B.c.:
(1) Quartetto in C major (TWV 43:C2)
(2) Concerto in B minor (TWV 43:h3)
Volume II, for flute, 2 vdg & B.c.:
(3) Sonata à 4 in G major (TWV 43:G10)
(4) Sonata in G major (TWV 43:G12)
Volume III, for oboe, violin, vdg & B.c.:
(5) Sonata à 4 in G minor (TWV 43:g2)

The manuscript of the fourth quartet included alternate parts for two violins instead of the two viola da gamba, which repeat almost verbatim the vdg parts one octave higher and have been included in the separate parts.

The edition has been prepared with MuseScore 2 and contains the score and 8 separate parts (bassoon, flute, oboe, vdg I, vdg II, violin I, violin II and B.c.):
- in PDF format (both in A4 imposition, for quick loose sheet printing, and in A3 imposition, for easy booklet printing),
- in MuseScore own .MSCZ format (for direct access and editing with MuseScore)
- in MusicXML format (for import in other music notation programmes).

All files can be downloaded freely from the VistaMare Musica score web page.

Anonymous, Sonates à deux violes (BNF Mus VM7-6297)

This late XVIII c. Paris manuscript lacks any authorship indication and bears, as a later caption, Pièces de viole avec la basse continue, but it is rather clear that both parts are intended for violes.

It contains six sonatas, rather challenging technically, and its galante style marks it as one of the latest specimens of the French viole literature.

The edition reproduces the full contents of the ms., with score and separate parts for either viola da gamba in PDF, MusicXML and MuseScore MSCZ formats; all can be freely downloaded from the VistaMare Musica web site.
