In 1978, Pine Ridge Vineyards was founded on a steeply terraced hillside flanked by a dramatic ridgeline of stately pine trees in the Stags Leap District.

Reflecting on our 2013 vintage with Winemaker Michael Beaulac and Assistant Winemaker Jason Ledbetter.

The 2013 Vintage was nothing short of ideal. From the growing season being long without any heat spikes, to the harvest having nearly no rain. The long warm growing season led to ideal phenolic material in the grape skins with wines showing remarkable color and easy extractable tannin.

The dry harvest gave the winemaking team the ability to pick at will as we saw no heat spikes and no rain in the future, we were able to meticulously pick fruit at will. Coming off a spectacular Vintage in 2012 it is hard to believe we would be blessed with an even better Vintage in 2013, but early indications all point to 2013 being extraordinary with broad rich palates while maintaining all the elegance and nuance of 2012.

Our in-depth winery tour begins in our estate vineyards, weather permitting, proceeding through our wine production facilities and continues into our wine caves for an exclusive barrel sample. The tour concludes in our caves with a hosted, seated wine and cheese pairing.

I honestly did not notice this place until my Wife was screaming about how we passed a Winery that makes her best friends favorite wine. We walk up dancing to the greek music playing outside and into a tasting room that looked into one of the many caves they use to store their barrels. Beautiful. The people are very friendly. This is where we find out that all the wines they let us taste come from Napa Grapes and my wife's bestie enjoys a wine that they make from grapes grown near Sacramento. Oops. Oh well, we are sending her a bottle of the good stuff so she can see the difference a valley can make. When you come, take a walk around the educational vineyard set up to help explain the growing process. It is impressive how labor intensive their passion for good wine is.

Staff can get a little to technical on the tour. If you just want to taste, don't bother with the tour since it will chill your buzz.

After being shut out of a couple of other vineyards which were closed already, it was a pleasant surprise to come across Pine Ridge still open and welcoming to finish out the day in the Napa Valley. My favorites here were the whites, though the reds weren't bad either. Overall, the staff were informative and helpful. After tasting one of the whites, and mentioned that I might like to buy a bottle, they informed me that it wasn't absolutely necessary to buy there, as the bottle in question would be available on the east coast, thus saving us the trouble of checking the bag at the airport.
