Conflicted about this.

Shenmue was a groundbreaking undertaking in its day. We can debate whether it was ever executed as well as it had been marketed, but it had ambition beyond its years, and I genuinely enjoyed it.

Much debate could be had on whether the game lacked commercial success because of the short lifespan of the dreamcast, or whether it just never appealed to the mainstream North American audience, however, in my opinion, it came close enough to realizing the world envisioned by Yu Suzuki that it should be a must-play in any serious gamers' repertoire.

Here's why I'm conflicted.

The amazing world created by Suzuki came at a serious cost; literally. The development budget at the time is estimated between $47-$70 million, (both conflicting quotes given by Yu Suzuki at different times.) That's $67-$99 million in 2015 dollars, and in 1999, it was the most expensive game in history.

Through I'm over the moon that Yu Suzuki has finally bit the bullet and decided to finish his epic story, this kickstarter is pegged at raising $2 million. With 30 days still remaining, Suzuki's already raised half of that goal, so it's definitely possible that more than $2M will come in... but doesn't a sequel like this require $100 million minimum?

Shenmue was great because of the intricate detail in every corner of every building in every town you could explore. It was a game which placed more emphasis on the experience than on hitting a completion point. This isn't uncommon for Japanese games, (or movies, or books for that matter) but it took an enormous amount of development resources to program all that detail.

How will those expectations be met on such a limited budget this time around?

Cops like these, are the closest the majority of Americans will ever come to a direct experience with terrorism.
We can't let this happen in Canada.
