MISSING PERSON ALERT: The Darke County Sheriff's Office is requesting the public's help in locating a missing female, Melissa Bergman, 44, from the Yorkshire, Ohio area. Melissa was last seen on foot today at approximately 3:30 PM. She was wearing a teal colored top and black pants. Melissa is approximately 5'4" 122 pounds, has shoulder length brown hair and hazel eyes. For those of you living in the Osgood and Yorkshire area, an Emergency Notification Message was sent to homes in the immediate vicinity of where she went missing. If you have any information on Melissa or her whereabouts, please contact the Darke County Sheriff's Office at 937-548-2020 Option 1.

Darke County Sheriff Issues Level 1 Ice Alert
Date: Saturday, February 25th, 2012 at 1:00 AM.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A LEVEL 1 ICE ALERT FOR DARKE COUNTY DUE TO BLACK ICE AND TREACHEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS ACROSS DARKE COUNTY.

Darke County Sheriff Toby L. Spencer has issued a Level 1 Ice Alert for Darke County. This Ice Alert has been issued to warn those who must travel on Darke County roadways to use extreme caution due to black ice and treacherous road conditions across Darke County. The snow that fell Friday evening has froze on all roadways in Darke County, including State & US Highways and black ice exists on most roadways. Motorists should use extreme caution while driving overnight tonight and on Saturday morning. The Darke County Sheriff’s Office has responded to numerous accidents and slideoffs tonight and deputies are still on the scene of many wrecks across the county.

This Level 1 Ice Alert takes effect immediately at 1:00 AM.

A LEVEL 1 ICE ALERT DOES NOT IMPOSE ANY RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL. MOTORISTS MAY TRAVEL AT THEIR OWN RISK.

Today we would like to take time to thank Captain Steve Stebbins for all of his dedication and work here at the Darke County Sheriff's Office as he prepares for retirement. Captain Stebbins has worked here at the Darke County Sheriff's Office for more than three decades. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff before advancing to Sergeant and eventually Captain of the road patrol and deputy division. Today is Captain Steve Stebbin's last tour of duty as he begins his retirement tomorrow. We wish him a happy retirement and the best of luck in the future!

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY CONFESSES TO NUMEROUS B&E’s IN 5 COUNTIES

On the afternoon of January 23, 2012 Detectives from Darke County traveled to Mercer County to interview Douglas N. Fonner, 27, Mendon, Ohio. Fonner was previously arrested by Mercer County Deputies in Mercer County in connection with a number of recent break-ins at grain elevators and other local businesses.

Darke and Mercer County Detectives together conducted an interview with Fonner. Fonner confessed that in the early morning hours of January 5, 2012 he broke into Birt’s Store and Mercer Landmark in New Weston, and Moody’s Auto Service in Ansonia. Fonner also confessed that on December 21, 2011 he broke into True Point Elevator in Osgood. All four businesses are located in northern Darke County, Ohio.

During the course of the interview, Fonner confessed to committing numerous break-ins to businesses throughout Auglaize, Darke, Mercer, Shelby and Van Wert counties beginning in November 2011.

Based on the information obtained during the investigations, multiple breaking and entering and theft charges will be filed through the Darke County Prosecutor’s Office.

Investigation continues with these cases.

January 26, 2012

DARKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE APPREHENDS TWO SUBJECTS BREAKING AND ENTERING

On January 26, 2012 at approximately 11:38 AM Darke County Sheriffs Deputies along with Preble County Sheriffs Deputies responded to 62 Billman Rd., in southern Darke County, on a complaint of subjects possibly on the property stealing scrap metal. Upon arrival Deputies confronted two subjects in possession of items from the property. Both subjects were apprehended without incident.

Arrested was David Elliot, 44, of Greenville. Mr. Elliot was booked into the Darke County jail on Breaking and Entering charges, and on a parole violation. Also arrested was Michael Jones, 34, of Greenville. Mr. Jones was also booked into the Darke County Jail on charges of Breaking and Entering, and also on an outstanding Darke County warrant recently issued by Darke County Adult Probation. Mr. Jones is currently awaiting sentencing in Darke County Common Pleas Court on another unrelated charge.

This case remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriffs Office.

In honor of our Captain, Steve Stebbins's retirement, the Darke County Commissioners have proclaimed today, Tuesday, January 31st, 2012, as Steve L. Stebbin's Day. We again want to thank Captain Stebbins for his 35 years of service here at the Darke County Sheriff's Office.
