Underside of a "broken" Pro-Ject Debut III turntable from eBay.
I think it got tagged as broken because someone tested it with a DC power supply. It's perfectly functional, but after being shipped with the platter banging around under the dust cover, a bit banged up.
There's not much to these things (left to right): synchronous motor, switch and phase shift network for the motor, and a terminal strip to break out the cartridge signals. Not a single semiconductor as far as I can tell.
If you told me in 2003 that 10 years out I'd be looking at a picture of a lego renditon of Billy Ray Cyrus' daughter "twerking it" in ill-fitting latex on the crotch of a guy dressed like Beetlejuice, I'd have called bullshit.
