How can it be fair of God to mete out eternal condemnation for temporal finite sins? Does the existence of hell negate the idea of a good, loving and merciful God?

Hear Paul Williamson attempt to answer these difficult questions at our October event:

What exactly does the Bible teach us about hell? Is it a place of eternal torment, or are the biblical images and descriptions about hell more of a metaphor?

Hear Paul Williamson explore this tricky subject at our October event:

“This group of pastors I work with in Peru—their commitment to the gospel is almost without bounds. I asked one of them, ‘How long did it take you to get to this little course that we’re doing?’ He goes, ‘36 hours on the bus. And I’m, ‘What! 36 hours?!’ And he goes, ‘Oh, it’s really good. It used to be 68!’ This is up and down the mountains and over cliff edges and all that kind of stuff. I think sometimes, ‘Man, we’re soft! These guys, they know when there’s a good opportunity and they will go out of their way to do it.’”

“Mexico is 95 per cent Roman Catholic, and so the influence of the Roman Catholic church in Mexico is enormous. You might arrange to do something with somebody, and they will say, “If God wills it.” It’s not just a throwaway line; they really mean that. There is a deep understanding that God is in control of things—in a way I think we don’t have here in Australia.”

Learn more about some of the differences between Mexican and Australian Christianity in Tony Payne’s interview with Peter Sholl:

When Peter Sholl headed off to Mexico more than a decade ago as a missionary, he learnt his first word of Spanish on the plane. Now Mexico is home, not only to Peter and his wife Sarah and their family, but to the extensive teaching ministry Peter conducts throughout Latin America using the Moore College “MOCLAM” course.

Peter recently dropped in to our studio to talk about the profound lessons he has learned in Mexico as a Christian and as a trainer of pastors. He also has some wise observations about Australian Christianity (as most returning missionaries do).

“The coming of the Spirit at the hand of Jesus is the final vindication of Jesus—the final indication of the coming of the last days—the coronation of the King—Jesus, the Son of God, finally in power—finally made both Christ and Lord.”
