On 'Solid Ground': The ground we walk on is not as permanent as one would assume : The Earth's crust is continuously being replenished. How does this happen? Once you go deep enough beyond the mantle, the picture becomes clearer. The crust is 'flowing' into the depths of the Earth, at pressures and temperatures where everything behaves like a liquid. In geological time frames, it acts exactly like a liquid being heated from below. Where continental plates meet, often one plate 'dives' under another, which new land is often formed by volcanoes and plates being pulled away from each other. Once you go beyond the Earth's mantle, one needs to traverse a region where rock is more fluid than solid. No materials are known that would withstand the tremendous heat and pressure in the inner core. Temperature is estimated at 5,700 K, and pressure as about 3,500,000 atmospheres.

Article extract 'Rock cycle'*: Rocks at the surface of the Earth are of many different ages, ranging from over 3 billion years old to less than 1 million years old.  Because under ordinary   circumstance matter can neither be created or destroyed, the new, younger rocks must have originated from older crustal material -  older rocks. Older rocks are destroyed by weathering processes and the remains are recycled into new rocks.  This cycle from old rocks to new rocks is called the rock cycle. The interaction between the tectonic and the hydrologic systems causes constant recycling of the materials of the Earth's crust. Rocks are heated, metamorphosed, melted, weathered, sediment is transported, deposited and lithified, then it may be metamorphosed again in yet another cycle.  This recycling of the material of the Earth's crust has been going on for billions of years, as far back as there is a preserved geologic record (about 4 billion years). 

The moving crust: Plate tectonics says that the Earth's strong outer layer (called the lithosphere, which consists of crust and uppermost mantle) is broken into a mosaic of plates that slowly move over a mechanically weaker layer (the asthenosphere, which is part of the upper mantle). Where these plates interact, major geological processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes.

Recycling the crust: An international team of researchers, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, geochemist James Day, has found new evidence that material contained in oceanic lava flows originated in Earth’s ancient Archean crust. These findings support the theory that much of the Earth’s original crust has been recycled by the process of subduction, helping to explain how the Earth has formed and changed over time. “Our new results are important because they provide strong evidence not only to tie materials that were once on Earth's surface to an entire cycle of subduction, storage in the mantle, and return to the surface as lavas, but they also place a firm time constraint on when plate tectonics began; no later than 2.5 billion years ago,” said Day.

Mapping the movement of the continental plates: GPS has been the most useful for studying the Earth's crustal movements. Twenty-one satellites are currently in orbit 20,000 km above the Earth as part of the NavStar system of the U.S. Department of Defense. These satellites continuously transmit radio signals back to Earth. To determine its precise position on Earth (longitude, latitude, elevation), each GPS ground site must simultaneously receive signals from at least four satellites, recording the exact time and location of each satellite when its signal was received. By repeatedly measuring distances between specific points, geologists can determine if there has been active movement along faults or between plates.

Prelude to The Light, #GlacierNationalPark, Montana

We got up at 4 in the morning to catch a 6 AM Flight from Ohio. We landed at around 10 AM, drove for 7 Hours and went in search of light. Finally at 9:00 PM MST we ran into this scene. By the time we got to bed we had been up for 22 hours. We would get 4 hours of sleep and get up to shoot the sunrise.

No one said #landscapephotography  was easy? Or A walk in the park?....but sights like these are sure worth the effort.

"Land's End"

This wind-battered coastline around Cornwall would have to be one of my favourites. This same wind though isn't very helpful when trying to capture it! On this particular evening, I hooked my camera bag under the tripod to keep it from taking flight while praying for the wild flowers to stay still :)

A Fall Angle, Zion National Park, UT - #PhotographyWorkflow, #howtophotograph

Here is photograph from Zion National Park taken in fall. Fall colors in Zion make for a beautiful scene, but you have to catch them at the right time of the year.

The exposure for this shot was pretty straightforward because it was a partly cloudly sky and everything in this canyon was in shaded. The color balance was tricky because the light bounced off the walls of the canyon giving everything a strong color cast. The image is all about composition. If you notice all the diagonal lines in this image point to the small waterfall in the Virgin river.
