Taken from Ibn Taymiyyah رحمةالله book "Letters from prison:”

One must relay the magnificent scene witnessed when Shaykh ul-Islaam was re-jailed,

"When he entered prison, he saw the prisoners busy with all kinds of time-wasting games for entertainment, such as chess and dice games, leading to loss of prayer. The Shaykh rebuked them strongly, and commanded them to keep the prayers, and turn towards Allaah in worship, repentance and good deeds. He taught them from the Sunnah what they needed to know, encouraging them to do good, and bolstering their faith, and thereby rendered the prison a haven for seekers of the knowledge of religion. Such a place became better than schools and circles.

Some of the released prisoners preferred staying with him rather than being free; and those frequenting his company increased to a point where the prison became full of them!"

It is reported form Abû Al-Dardâ – (radiAllahu anhu) – that he said,

“Three make me laugh, and three make me cry.

Those that make me laugh are a person who puts his hopes in this worldly life while death pursues him, a person who is heedless [of his Lord] while [his Lord] is not heedless of him, and a person who always laughs while he does not know whether he has pleased Allâh or angered Him.

What makes me cry is being separated from my beloved: Muhammad and his party (the Companions), the horrors of the time of death, and standing in front of Allâh ‘azza wa jall on the Day when the secrets will be revealed and I do not know will I then go to Paradise or Hell?”

[Ibn Al-Mubârak, Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqâ`iq article 250]
