My background is in digital TV technology. I was part of the launch of terrestrial digital in the UK whilst working for BBC R&D, defining the specs and building the data streaming systems.I then went on to work for NDS specialising in data delivery for TV apps and EPGs. I am now independent. I have several patents to my name including the IPR behind Prism video streaming.

General Discussion  -
I'm trying out Rackspace hosting for my +Joomla! sites. My current hosting provider, Hosting UK, have provided a brilliant service but the direction they are taking with cloud infrastructure doesn't integrate well with Ubuntu. I've dabbled with Amazon but am wondering about a more open solution.

First impressions of Rackspace are good and I've got my first server up and running with Ubuntu 14.04 (currently in beta). One tool that seems to be missing is decent firewall control, which Amazon EC2 does very well. I can get around that with iptables but would have rather not fiddled around at that level.

Do you have any experience with Rackspace, especially with #Joomla and #Ubuntu ? I'd love to hear what your experiences have been like.

We did consider +Rackspace and had a trial, I liked the ease of setting up the initial instances and awesome customer support/sales teams, we had some issues with config as well but we opted for +Heart Internet in the end, really love their hybrid servers and support!

Vectorise the web

The Netriver website is filled with ideas. From an animated vector graphic menu, to vector graphics framing bitmaps, to repeated vector graphic elements.

The importance of vector graphics is:
* They integrate with HTML5 so you can manipulate them, animate them and link items in them, just like the rest of the website, unlike boring bitmaps.
* They can be included in-line with the page, in the HTML, so that they load with the page not some time afterwards. This is a lot quicker.
* They are pin-sharp on any device with any type of DPI of screen (retina).

The Netriver site is built on Joomla 3.2 with our Vector Web Toolkit ( We're looking for partners to trial it in templates and bespoke website developments. Are you interested?

So what's happened with this "Ubuntu browser" in Trusty? When I run a web app, like Googlemail, it opens up this Ubuntu Browser application rather than Firefox. Where did that come from and how do I set it back?

+Nick Zielinski. Already tried that but it had no effect. I guess it's a bug.

A positive review of the new Ubuntu phone OS launching an the first devices soon.

One thing I didn't realise, but which makes a lot of sense, is that it is supported by Canonical's Landscape system management system. This could make a lot of sense to IT departments supporting mobile devices.
"we soon got used to it and found it intuitive and quick to use"

Nicely done team Unity!

We have been refreshing our website

We've been working on our #SVG toolkit and used it to redesign The star of the site is the clock-face navigation, which is a vector art based Joomla menu animated with jQuery. #SMIL would have been smoother but unfortunately IE doesn't want to play.

So Google are trying to promote you getting Drive on all your devices. But as most people commented, it ain't available in Linux so no, you can't get it on all devices.
Don't have Drive on all your computers, phones, and tablets yet?

Just visit on every device and we'll have you up and running in no time. Give it a go!
