Display settings issue with HDMI -

My intent with installing Kubuntu my old Dell machine was to have a basic HTPC.  This evening I tried connecting the machine to my home theater.  I am using a Denon 1910 AV receiver.  I connected the computer via a DVI to HDMI cable to one of the receiver's HDMI inputs.  When I first booted up, everything looked great.  I tried changing rez from the default 1080P to 720P - that worked fine.  Then I tried what I thought was a 480i setting - the display went blank.
I tried rebooting but still no image - not even log-in.
I connected the computer back to my old Dell 4:3 DVI monitor and it booted up fine.  I then went back to the HDMI connection.  This time I could get to the login screen but as soon as I logged in the screen went blank - I am assuming my Denon receiver got confused and refused to display anything.  If I connected the Dell display during this event, it refused to display anything - said the input was incompatible.
SO - here is my question:
Is there a config file somewhere that is holding the rez setting when the system sees an HDMI type interface that I can overwrite back to 1080p?  This is a Intel core 2 CPU 2G RAM, older Radeon x1300 video card.
Sorry for the verbose message - had to explain myself.  Hope I made sense.

Newbie guy again.....
So,I am running Kubuntu 12.04 LTS and I am wondering if I should upgrade to 14.10. Is there any advantage to doing so? How do I go about this? I read somewhere that I would have to an incremental upgrade.... Is that the case?

Hello!
I am brand new to Ubuntu - a beginner.  I have installed Ubuntu 12 on my old Dell machine (Duo Core, 4GB).  So far so good.
Actually, I started out by installing Ubuntu from a USB drive but just recently, I downloaded Kubuntu and dropped that in.  (I like the plasma desktop better) anyway - running the System Monitor, I noticed that the Plasma Desktop is eating up around 40% of my CPU.  Is this normal?  Seems like that is a lot just for the GUI.
Sorry if my descriptions are odd - I am a newbie!
Any help, comments are appreciated!

THANKS!

+Biser Angelov is right. But fluxbox is not an official ubuntu release, unless you know of a fubuntu. If you deviate from the popular releases anything is possible. So many options like starting from the server distribution and apt-get your favorite, to starting at ubuntu's roots with debian. Linux offers a world of possibility. Thats why I like to use http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ because I get a good sampling of many distributions with links directly to their iso.

Upgrade?
I ran the upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 and all seemed OK (though it did trash my desktop settings) but now it wants to "upgrade" to 13.10. I am letting it do it but what is this? I am wondering if I have done something wrong.

+Jussi Schultink Yes - Definitely was on 12.04.  It DID upgrade to 14.10 but then, after it booted up, it insisted on updating(?) to 13.10.  I let it do that and THEN it wanted to update to 14.10.  Well, all is fine now - running 14.10 and working well.  Very odd, though.  I have a feeling I did something wrong or something got out of sync in the process.

Password requirement question....
Is there a way to make the system consider me logged in for period of time? Whenever I install software, the system askes me for my password. OK... I get that but once entered, can it be made to stop asking for as long as I am actively using the machine and maybe a few minutes after activity stops? Kind of like a screen saver. That way I can continue to explore for and install software with out being nagged.
Its like, "Hey machine! It's me! I'm right here...its OK!". :)
Did that make sense?

Hello!
VERY new to Kubuntu and Linux.  I just installed (or reinstalled) Kubuntu on an older Dell box - Core2 CPU 2G RAM.  So far, I am liking it - VERY fast on this box.
Anyway - I have been poking around trying to learn things.  One thing I did was install Radio Tray (I like to listen to Otto's Baroque).  Well, I am periodically getting the pop-up stating "an application has crashed"  When I look at the details, it says Radio Tray has crashed.  Well, I don't think so - it is still playing just fine - not even a hiccup.
What's up with this kind of thing?
Otherwise, performance is very good - though I have not really done a heck of a lot beyond installing Chrome (not Chromium - is that better?)

What's up with community search?
Maybe I am being a dunce but I am getting very limited results when I do a community search. I was looking for a Ubuntu community that I wanted to rejoin but now, when I search using 'Ubuntu' I get only 4 communities listed. I KNOW there are many more than this. I get similar results when I search for others. Is it just me?

Introduction
I am married, have one child (who counts as three), one wife and live in a townhome with a cockatiel who thinks he owns the place.I like to watch my son grow up, go camping in a pop-up camper, take bad pictures while on hikes, watch Pixar and Disney computer animated movies on Bluray, tweak my cobbled together "home theater", take naps, drink coffee, pretend to know what I am doing at work and generally just get by.  I live in the frozen north of a land called Minnesota where it gets really cold in the winter. But, we can take it! (we have to) I like Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Pat Metheny and Bach. I really don't know what is on television since I don't watch it.

over priced for what you get. I ordered a New York strip - not impressed at all; a bit tough and not that flavorful. I have done better at chains. Also, baked potato was luke warm. Service was good.

Good fast food... lots of choices. Good iced tea. I like the unsweetened...... the sweetened is too sweet for me but I would think sweet tea fans will like it. Good friendly service.
