+Google announced a new security problem with Google Plus that affects 52 million users. +Tony Romm reports:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2018/12/10/google-reveals-new-security-bug-affecting-more-than-million-users/

Here’s the post, in which they said they’ve begun the process of notifying users & enterprise customers: https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/expediting-changes-google-plus/

Did you receive any notification about this post, which announced that they’ll sunset Google+ APIs in 90 days (faster than previously planned) or that they would “accelerate sunsetting consumer Google+, bringing it forward from August 2019 to April 2019” ?

I wish they had pushed this post to affected users here and to unaffected consumers using notifications on Plus and Twitter.

Sad news for the future of this community, which I created many years ago: Google is sunsetting Google+ https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/project-strobe/ I hope that folks here will seek out the newsgroups, hashtags and Facebook groups where conversations about open government continue.

I see lots of folks who are sad about +Google’s announcement that it will be shutting down the consumer version of Google+ after an audit found a misconfigured API was exposing private private data. As the company noted, low adoption and activity were a favor in the decision: https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/project-strobe/

Despite my best intentions, I’ve never returned to the way I used this platform years ago, neglecting whatever community or network I’ve built. I’m sorry about that — if you want to stay connected, you can find me on Twitter @digiphile or Facebook http://facebook.com/AlexHoward, among other places. Thank you for every comment, share or +1 you’ve given over the years: it’s been a good run.

At first look, @Google's launch of Data Set Search looks like a dramatic improvement to public access to public information, at a global scale: https://www.blog.google/products/search/making-it-easier-discover-datasets/ An epochal change in the history of open data.

After a delay last year and a flawed consultation in 2018, the United States has now missed a second, self-imposed deadline for a new national action plan for open government for the Open Government Partnership. Context: https://fcw.com/articles/2018/08/29/howard-open-gov-under-trump.aspx So the question now is: will that matter in any substantive way for the American public, transparency in the U.S. government, or the future of this multi-stakeholder initiative?

Are you listening?
Hello, all! It's been a while since I've logged in here. Glad to see folks sharing & commenting in communities. In theory, there are 1.5 million accounts circling me. In practice, I'm not sure how many of you are active. Please +1 or comment to let me know you're here! I'd like to reconnect with people on Plus, if you're here.

From John Wonderlich and me, for the Sunlight Foundation: "Political spending is increasingly taking place online, and yet online ads have the least transparency. Reforms to regulations and disclosure are urgently needed.

Online political ad spending should be proactively disclosed in a machine-readable format online to the public and election regulators. Google and Facebook could even do that online every day, for each buy and campaign, in a feed of ads and their targets." https://sunlightfoundation.com/2017/09/12/technology-companies-should-publish-political-advertising-files-online/
