The portions are a good size, and are filled with lot's of fishy goodness, and the menu is extensive, with several varieties (classic through to Japanese fusion.) But, for somewhere that is meant to be the best ceviche in Peru, it falls short.

I don't even eat seafood, so I got one of the only non seafood dishes, lomo saltado! The kiwi pineapple juice was probably the best juice of my life. Love the decor here too! Be sure you try Gaston Acurio's other restaurants too, which are less famous, but even better (e.g. Chicha, Los Bachiche).

We sat by the bar and Omar, our friendly server, brought us chips of papas nativas with a variety of savory and creamy sauces and some beers. Then, we had a wonderful causa with crispy fish chicharrones as an appetizer. It was served as if it were four pieces of sushi. The flexibility of the potato dough made each bite a pleasure. We finished our meal with the best ceviches we have ever had. Mine was made with cabrilla and each piece almost melted like butter in my mouth. Two cortados and a festive atmosphere completed one of the best meals we have had in Peru.

Although Google has this place listed as closed, we visited in late April 2014 and it is definitely open. People were lining up 20 minutes before opening for good reason, as the food was truly outstanding both in quality and presentation. The atmosphere and service is also excellent. Definitely worth its reputation as one of the best cebicherias in Lima!

We ordered the ceviche tasting platter--all of which were excellent. One was the classic leche de tigre, another one a bit spicy, and another one tasted distinctly Japanese. Having had ceviche about 5 different times while in Peru, La Mar's stood out as having the freshest fish. It's really not the same afterward when you try other ceviche! The other dishes were not standouts but still overall good. There was a soup recommended by the waiter as the one we ordered was not available--I don't remember the name, but it was red and had fish and crab in it. It was distinct, but neither me nor my friend enjoyed it very much. Another dish was thai curry inspired that was quite good but not outstanding. I also had a virgin cocktail that was delicious and the queso helado which was delicious! A bit icy rather than creamy but the best ice cream I had in Lima! (I tried a lot of ice creams, apparently it is not their specialty.) The chips and corn they give you is fresh and wonderful, and they gave us an extra bag at the end to take when we asked for it. It is good value for the money, and we had tons of extra food left over (3 dishes--2 people). The ambiance was nice--it is only outdoors and only open during the day. It's under a canopy and fresh and pleasant. Lots of business people and birthday goers. If you get there when it opens at 12, there is no need to wait in line. We were the first ones there!

We came to La Mar as adviced by a friend. We sat in front of the door at 12 waiting for it to open. We sat down as first at 12h01 to see the place be totally full and have a waiting line at 12h20. Amazing! Amazing was the food as well. Great ceviche and breaded calamare. Good wines, great service. We felt so welcome and got great adviced on what to choose from the menu. If I ever go back to Lima, this place will be on the top of my list!

I love the ceviche at La Mar San Francisco! Trying the original LA Mar is a must during our stay in Lima, and it didn't disappoint. Ceviche sampler was awesome! Drinks were great! Didn't order any dessert as nothing worth to try. Great atmosphere and service!
