There's over 1900 reviews, so there's no point me rehashing how great this place is. Lima was our final stop in our Peru tour, so I've had loads of ceviche already to compare to. La Mar beats all of them hands down. The English menu is slightly challenging to decipher, but here are some things you should definitely get: Trio of ceviche sampler - this is a great introduction to three different types of ceviche. Nikkei ceviche - this is in the sampler, but we loved it so much we ordered another portion. Massive chunks of tuna in a Japanese-Peruvian marinade - just so amazing and something you won't get anywhere else. Amazing value at like S.30ish Hot plate of scallops & clams - grilled to perfection, you get 6 scallops and loads of massive clams. So tasty. If shellfish isn't your thing, go for the other hot plate, which is squid and octopus. Look out of the specials on the chalkboards - when we were there, we lucked out with jumbo camarones, which are a prawn/crayfish local hybrid. Absolutely amazing. All portions are pretty sizeable, so between two people I would recommend ordering 2 dishes, maybe 3, and see how you go before getting more. Go either at 12pm when it just opens to get a table immediately, or go after 2pm (on a weekday) to avoid any queues. Also as everything is cooked to order, it might take some time for dishes to arrive, so this is definitely not a place to go for a quick lunch stop. Expect to spend 1-2 hours.

Absolutely amazing experience! Service was top notch. Seafood quality was great. Flavor was great. Artful presentation. Nice ambiance and good level of cleanliness. Prices were affordable for US or European comparisons but on the pricier end in comparison to most Peruvian restaurants.

Everything is overpriced. Check the price of your order and make sure you are not getting ripped off. The waiter offered us with the plates that are not on the menu and charged us with unacceptable cost (jacked up the price for every order by more than 50%). The food was not even close to our expectation either.

I don't even eat seafood, so I got one of the only non seafood dishes, lomo saltado! The kiwi pineapple juice was probably the best juice of my life. Love the decor here too! Be sure you try Gaston Acurio's other restaurants too, which are less famous, but even better (e.g. Chicha, Los Bachiche).

The restaurant is awesome. Flavor is top notch but the prices are a bit on a high side for a Peruvian restaurant.

We ordered the ceviche tasting platter--all of which were excellent. One was the classic leche de tigre, another one a bit spicy, and another one tasted distinctly Japanese. Having had ceviche about 5 different times while in Peru, La Mar's stood out as having the freshest fish. It's really not the same afterward when you try other ceviche! The other dishes were not standouts but still overall good. There was a soup recommended by the waiter as the one we ordered was not available--I don't remember the name, but it was red and had fish and crab in it. It was distinct, but neither me nor my friend enjoyed it very much. Another dish was thai curry inspired that was quite good but not outstanding. I also had a virgin cocktail that was delicious and the queso helado which was delicious! A bit icy rather than creamy but the best ice cream I had in Lima! (I tried a lot of ice creams, apparently it is not their specialty.) The chips and corn they give you is fresh and wonderful, and they gave us an extra bag at the end to take when we asked for it. It is good value for the money, and we had tons of extra food left over (3 dishes--2 people). The ambiance was nice--it is only outdoors and only open during the day. It's under a canopy and fresh and pleasant. Lots of business people and birthday goers. If you get there when it opens at 12, there is no need to wait in line. We were the first ones there!
