Consider an ASE Blue Seal Shop for your auto repairs.  I am taking the last of my re-certification tests tomorrow.  This encompasses 10 different tests to cover the knowledge necessary to understand and properly repair the various systems and components on your car.  To keep certified these tests are updated and must be taken every 5 years.  It takes two days to complete these tests.  I hate to count the number of times I have taken these tests.  However,  I like keeping up to date and continually learning!

#Save money  The pictures below are from the air conditioning controls for a Jaguar.  The solenoids short out and can burn the circuit board on the control head.  Whenever possible we try to either repair these ourselves or have them repaired, saving you from having to purchase an expensive new part.

Whether your car manufacturer refers to this light as a “Check Engine Light“, a MIL (malfunction indicator light), or the “Service Engine Soon” light, if you read the codes yourself and cannot repair the problem, then it may be in your best interest to not clear the code.
Many scan tools can give you the basic OBD (on board diagnostics)  or OBDII code, but it is still only a very small part of the information needed to actually diagnose the problem.  The scan tools that most professional shops use, give you “freeze frame” data that lists the readings of many different sensors at the time that the computer felt it necessary to illuminate this light.  Also, many times there are “sub-codes” that give additional information as to what the parameters were for setting the code.  This additional information is instrumental to properly diagnosing the problem.
For example, many times a car will set a code for an O2 sensor.  Sometimes it is really the O2 sensor, but in most cases with this code, we have found that it is another problem that is the root cause.  The O2 sensor code, depending on if it has sub-codes or not, usually means that the O2 sensor is sending data to the computer that is outside the preset parameters in the computer for what it should be getting from this sensor, and so it turns on the light.  Since the O2 sensor tells you if the fuel mixture is close to the ratio it is supposed to be (llamda) or stoichiometric, then you can see that something as simple as a vacuum leak could be the problem.
In conclusion, if you are going to take your car in for a professional diagnosis, not clearing the code will give the technician more information which could help with getting the proper diagnosis, resulting a car that is fixed right the first time, which will make everybody happy, and that is our goal at IMM.
Thank you for reading this.
