Endless Rosecrans

On this Memorial Day, we pay tribute to all who have sacrificed and served so that we may enjoy our freedom! Let's never forget them!!

Rosecrans Military Cemetery sets atop the bluffs of Point Loma overlooking San Diego Bay. I cried at Rosecrans as I thought about all the lives and their sacrifice.

Steamboat Arabia Artifacts

I hope +Ellie Kennard will enjoy this for +Farm Friday #FarmFriday !!

Door knobs, hinges, kegs of nails, and other hardware slated for 16 towns and hundreds of farms along the Missouri River was loaded on the Steamboat Arabia in 1856 headed north from Kansas City. It hit a tree snag and sank.

This was the Wal-Mart of it's time. A wonderful museum now displays the contents. It's a time capsule of life on the midwest prairie in the 1850's.

How to Start and Curate a Special Interest Theme on G+

Special Interest Themes or Hashtag Themes have been on G+ since the very beginning. Many of those were photography themes because photographers found a home on G+ right from the very start. However hashtag themes can go far beyond photography. Special Interest Themes are easy and fun!! All it takes is a hashtag and YOU, the curator of the theme!!

Pick a Theme What are you passionate about? What really drives you? Do you want to connect with others that share that common interest? Is it railroads, food, travel, art or something else?

Pick a Hashtag Select a hashtag that is simple and easy to remember. My most recent theme is #EverydayLandscape. Put that hashtag in the Google search box and see where it is already used. You may have found a theme already exists using that hashtag. Don’t get discouraged. Perhaps you can team up with the existing theme or pick a different hashtag. Check the various spellings that people might use. For example, early on some of our participants made the theme name plural instead of singular. Remember, the key is short and simple!! Give the hashtag name some real thought!!

Decide how often you want to curate the theme. Do you want to do it daily or weekly? You might incorporate that into the hashtag. For example #WeeklyFood, #FridayFood, #SacredSunday, #GrassTuesday, #WaterBirdWednesday, #SwampySaturday, or #LandscapePhotography. Quick note, those last several themes are already taken.

Be sure to check out the Find A Photo Theme Community (see below). You will discover wonderful active hashtag themes there. You may also get ideas for a new theme of your own. If you do elect to start a new theme, be sure to post about it in that community so others can find it.

Where Will You Share Posts from Participants? You can share posts in your own stream. You may want to create a brand page from which to share them and you can always share them to a collection or a community. You have lots of choices here so pick what you like best. You don’t have to do everything at once. If your theme is successful, it can evolve and you can do more things later. For #EverydayLandscape, I’ve used an existing brand page, the +Landscape Photography Theme page to share the photos and I created a new collection for them. I just called it the #EverydayLandscape collection. The brand page owns the collection. Be sure to share that collection weekly.

Will You Curate the Theme by Yourself or Do You Want Help? This is a personal choice. You can always start a theme by yourself and enlist friends to help you as the theme evolves. One good reason to share from a brand page, is that you can have multiple managers of the page and each has sharing ability so all of your curators can do the sharing. Most of the themes I curate, I do so by myself. However, the #LandscapePhotography theme which has been around since June, 2012 has a whole team of awesome curators!!

Prepare to Launch Your Theme Congratulations, you have picked a hashtag and you are ready to go!! A few days before the launch, tell you friends!! Post about it in your own stream and to communities that might be interested. You should be the first person to post to the theme. Be sure to tell posters what is expected. Do you want posters to plus mention you so that you will get a notification? Do you insist on a photo and must that photo be taken by the poster? That is, must it be an original photo?

Where to Find Suitable Posts for Your Theme? Check the profiles in your own circles. There’s a reason that you are following those people. Do they share the same passion as you do for this theme? Definitely tell them about it so they can participate. Visit communities that might have appropriate content for your theme. Go shopping!!! This is a fun activity and you may meet some great new people!!

Curating Your Theme Enter the hashtag into the Google search box and press “enter”. That will give you all the recent posts that have used that hashtag. If you have selected a unique hashtag, then you won’t have a long list!! Respond to each of the posters. At least give them a +1. As you continue to go through this list several times a day, you can easily skip those that have a +1 as you have already processed them. Be sure to tell the poster why you like the post and encourage them to post again. Educate them on any rules if needed. Be sure to thank them!!

If you are finding the posts in your own stream and wish to share the post in a different stream, then you will want to keep 2 tabs open. The first tab is for your own stream with the search results of your hashtag. The second tab is for the brand page that you are using to share the participants post to a collection. I copy/paste the posters name to find the post to share in the participant’s stream and I do that from the second tab where the sharing is done. If you have more than once collection, be sure to share it to your theme collection.

Continue Curating It will take about a week for posters to notice your theme and another week before posters are participating. Continue to curate your theme and build support for it. Be sure to share the collection weekly. It takes about a month to establish the theme.

Above All!! Have Fun!! Share and Enjoy!!!

Kaibab Squirrel

For 40 years I searched for the illusive Kaibab Squirrels!! I found this pair folickling in the Kaibab Forest on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Millions of years ago, these were Abert's squirrels. As the Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon and the Kaibab Plateau rose, these guys become isolated with desert on 3 sides and the canyon on the south. They evolved into their own sub-species known as the Kaibab Squirrel. It's called isolated evolution. They are distinctive and noted for their fluffy white tails which blend in with the snow on the North Rim.

What have you searched for? Has it taken you as long as it took me?
