The Underground was once a very cool place to visit. It had several great restaurants inside and in the immediate vicinity, with some cool shops and even the Cafe du Monde was there for a bit. Then came the invasion of the street urchins. They came because of the air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter. Any and all possible places to sit for a bit to rest, tie a kids shoe, whatever became impossible. The urchins were everywhere sucking the life out of the place. There they would stay, day after day, never spending a dime. Loud obnoxious, foul language spewing urchins. People with money chose to spend their hard earned cash elsewhere. The restaurants and cool shops closed one by one. Still the urchins came. It's sad really because it really was a cool place to bring out of town guests. Not so anymore. Don't bother unless you just love walking with the underbelly of society. For the record I have nothing against the sea faring variety of Urchins.

I loved it. I had a great time. It is a little over crowded but other than that it was awesome. I think it was amazing.

VERY DANGEROUS! As another reviewer said 'Underground Atlanta is now a combination of a ghost town and a scene from "The Walking Dead".' So True! We felt like we were running for our lives from zombies(bums & thugs) without trying to tip them off we were scared. I usually love exploring different cities when we travel, but I will NOT be coming back to Atlanta.

I only like the vintage feel of the place minus the dilapidated entrance (i.e. fountains that don't work in disarray) and the countless panhandlers outside. Can't wait to see how it looks once it is purchased by a developer and overhauled!

I avoid going to Underground Atlanta as much as possible. Its leaves anything to be desired. If I could give it no stars I definitely would. The only time I am typically there is when I am working a promotional event or doing some guerrilla marketing. This place is home of the ratchets. The underground mall is nothing more than a bunch of cheap shops, vendor carts and a couple of FootLockers. The Marta station across the street (5 Points) is where all the panhandlers, homeless people, drug addicts, and dealers post up all day and night because they don't have anything else better to do. If you are not from here or not familiar with the area then you definitely do not want to be wandering around there alone.

My husband grew up in Atlanta and after almost 15 years we just recently moved here. He suggested that we go for a family outing. My kids had a blast. We do a lot of tourist type things and moving from Florida, we are used to seeing very family oriented attractions. My daughter said this was the best one yet!! The vendors were friendly but pushy. The food was great (Johnny rockets). The little arcade was a nice surprise. We all had a great family day underground.

Awful what has happened to Underground Atlanta. I came to a Braves game as a kid... like in '92 and remembered Underground Atlanta as essentially the premier tourist attraction in the city. Lots of activity, good shopping, activities, etc. Now as an adult, I just got back from a trip to explore the city at the end of September 2013.... and WOW, my how things have changed! Underground Atlanta is now a combination of a ghost town and a scene from "The Walking Dead". My wife had planned an awesome trip the city including some must see attractions such as Midtown, Buckhead, Piedmont Park, Centennial Olympic Park, etc. (must visit places in the city). And even though hardly a mention of it showed up in any of her guidebooks, I insisted we go check out Underground because of my prior experience as a kid. Virtually everyone we came across was extremely shady, appeared on drugs, old dudes with no shirts on stumbling around, people mumbling disrespectful comments, worn and abandoned visitor's center... not pretty. The retail mall was open but there was literally not one person inside when we walked through. My wife couldn't get out of there quickly enough and I couldn't blame her. Not a good place to visit, not a good place for kids. I really hope Atlanta can do something to turn the area around, but for now, it is not even close to being worth a visit.
