Looking forward to taking part in this 3-day +The Rockefeller Foundation - sponsored meeting on whether we can create a new open source pharmaceutical industry. About 23 delegates, including +Open Source Malaria +Osddlinux CSIROSDD +Open Society Foundations +John Wilbanks +zakir thomas . If interested, follow https://twitter.com/OSPInfo and watch for #opensourcepharma My personal aim: a roadmap of how a public domain compound, arising from a public research process, can become a medicine that reaches the maximum number of relevant patients.

A foil igloo filled with hot solvent in a "warm-up post" as I try and get back into regular chemistry broadcasting.

The unseen part of science

Research doesn't always go to plan. Accidents do occasionally happen. Fortunately I recovered the 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethanol that splattered the floor of my fumehood with minimal loss of material.

I remember this moment quite clearly. I was tired and stressed. But, research needs to be done! So, following a moment of profuse frustration coupled with a series of expletives, I manned-up, kept (reasonably) calm. And carried on.

Goo that crystallises under a high vacuum is fantasmical. The flask was quite warm afterwards.

The material is crude phenylglycinol that I prepared by reducing phenylglycine with lithium aluminium hydride.

Very excited to launch OSM Series 4. Lots of data that has come from the private sector and is now in the public domain. Very promising set, ripe for further investigation.

See also OSM blog post about this: http://malaria.ourexperiment.org/uri/405

If you're a med chemist and you want to go straight to the detail, read the briefing document: http://malaria.ourexperiment.org/uri/404 - this will be used as a starting point to plan the first 10 compounds for the consortium to make.
