Will robots and automation technology replace industrial workers in Africa? According to a report, robots are currently too expensive to replace the workers in labor-intensive industries, most of which are in the very early stages of the industrialization process. Robots tend to best be used in technologically demanding fields such as automobile or electronics manufacturing. Read more: #robotics

The big concern about "collaborative" robots operating alongside humans in plants and facilities remains safety. Is the technology ready to widely deploy, and what is being done to establish international standards to protect people from errors and accidents? Learn the answers via the ISA blog by Mathieu Bélanger-Barrette, an engineer at Robotiq. https://bit.ly/2EuuZSx #robotics

For an MPC application, how do you build a smoothed moving mean from a batch level to use as a controlled variable? One suggestion: Use rate limiting when a ripple is significantly faster than a true change in the process variable. Also note that most times a cycle in a disturbance flow is already causing cycling in other variables (due to the multivariable nature of the process). Want to learn more? Scientists have found that artificial intelligence systems fail a vision test a child could accomplish with ease. Computer vision systems are key technology in industrial automation, and researchers are trying to determine why machines get tripped up so easily. Speculation is that humans have something that AI lacks: the ability to understand when a scene is confusing and thus go back for a second glance. #AI
