It seems that lately a different company or service has been the target of a malicious data breach each day. In the unfortunate event that your company is the victim of a security breach, you may have notice requirements under state law in the states where you operate -- and the states where your workers reside.

In this two part article I cover some of these notice requirements, discuss exemptions and safe harbors, and provide a sample list of what you should include in your written notice.

In the past five years, over 25 states have passed laws establishing a new type of business entity -- the "benefit corporation." Benefit corporations, which include companies such as Ben and Jerry's and Patagonia, allow organizations to balance the revenue goals of for-profit business with the ability to simultaneously pursue social, environmental, or community service objectives.

This pursuit of "greater good" in the course of doing business may influence individuals' decisions to choose one company over the other -- not only in the consumer market, but also in a company's existing and future talent pool -- especially where Millennial workers are concerned.

In my latest article, linked below, I discuss the growing trend of benefit corporations and why they matter to HR.

Does your company pursue community service, environmental sustainability, or other "greater goods" in its daily operations?

I am pleased to announce that +Elaine Quayle and I received a 2014 Apex Award for Communication Excellence in the "Most Improved Publication" category for BLR's HR Audit Checklists handbook.

This manual integrates the best elements of two legacy products -- MLSP's Employment Practices Self Audit Workbook and BLR's HR Audit Checklists book.

With the assistance of the entire team of HR editors, Elaine and I reorganized the manual, added new sections on emerging HR concerns, and updated all content.

Congratulations are in order for the entire HR team, as this book is a success for us all!

Google has launched a new program to explore and promote innovative new workplace uses for its wearable "Google Glass" technology. Industries such as health care, emergency services, and sports teams have partnered with developers to make glass work for them in unique ways, and Google hopes to add more businesses and industries to the list. In my newest article, I talk about the new Glass at Work program and explore some of the existing and future uses of Glass.

If cost and privacy concerns weren't a barrier, would you ever use Glass in your workplace?
