Fun, Flavour & Foraging for all the famiy at The Forest Showcase Food Festival

From the nutritional and healthy, to the indulgent naughty but nice, The Forest of Dean comes alive on 7th October with its Annual Food Festival held in the grounds of The Speech House Hotel.

The Forest Showcase is an event with a lot more going on than most food festivals…featuring the best fresh regional produce from over 100 top local & artisan producers, from gourmet burgers and handmade scotch eggs, to award winning preserves & chutneys, fine cheeses, farmhouse ciders and speciality wines, ales & plenty of flavoured gins!. It’s a great opportunity to get a real taste of the best of the area.

This year our theme will be foraging and we bring you an opportunity to go on a festival forage. You can join local forager Liz Knight as she takes you on a family foraging walk through the beautiful Speech House woods. As you walk, you and your children will learn how to identify and gather a range of wild foods including spices, seeds, nuts, berries fruit and more, turning what grows in your garden and in the wild into store cupboard ingredients. With Liz’s expert guidance, you’ll learn how to preserve all these finds to make your winter diet packed full of delicious flavours.

The cookery theatre will bring you a variety of cookery demonstrations from some of the areas top chefs designed to get you cooking with hints, tips and secrets from the experts. Rob Cox, head chef at The Tudor Farmhouse will be preparing a couple of dishes from their current menu, the first will be grilled sweet corn porridge, prawns and red pepper, the second will be Welsh lamb with Jerusalem artichoke and hazelnuts. Yvette Farrell, owner of the Forest of Dean’s premier award winning cookery school will be using some of our foraged ingredients and cooking up a simple cheese with nettle flatbread and a chutney - A homemade ploughmans.!

Also returning this year will be our very popular free Parent & Child cookery classes with healthy eating advisor & cookery teacher Glyn Owen from ‘Kids & Food’.
Places are limited & you can book your place on these classes & the forage on the Forest Showcase website.

After you’ve done your foodie shopping, you can sit out enjoying tasty hot food & a refreshing drink (or two), we have some great gins, prosecco, beers, wines & ciders to try! . With great live music including The Paris Jazz Café Swing Band bringing you acoustic music from the Parisian café era and the French jazz of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, with a taste of classics from the roaring 20’s and swinging 30’s and 40’s to the finest Hot Club Jazz. We also have music from The Forest Swing Band and singing from The Forest Treblemakers & The Forest Singers

The event will feature children’s activities with entertainment throughout the day from Jitterbug Circus. There are also plenty of free food related arts workshops. With a selection of arts & crafts on display along with green ideas on composting, an animal or two!, a vintage cider press crushing apples, tips on vegetable growing & keeping bees this really is an event worth visiting, so come with empty tummies & we promise you will be full to bursting when you leave.

The Forest Showcase will be held in the Speech House Hotel grounds, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire,on Sunday 7th October from 10am, tickets can be purchased in advance to avoid the queues from the website www.forestshowcase.org

When i brainstormed setting up Forest Traders 6 years ago, at the heart of it was always giving back to the community and helping people, however that may be. Charity fundraising, free advice to businesses, promoting them at an affordable cost......and whatever else i could.

Thank you to everyone who shared the post last week about Zippy the missing cat. Thanks to this, Zippy was found and returned to his delighted owners who in turn, very kindly gifted me with this beautiful bunch of flowers and chocolates! It was very heartwarming to know that i could help and i was ecstatic that he was safely home.

It doesn't take a lot to make someones day but it can really make a difference and i love that. Something to remember on even the hardest days! :-)
