Greeted by hostesses wearing black, last Friday's Junior-Senior Banquet was an opportunity to show gratitude for those members of our community who have made this school year a success. The Night at the Oscars themed evening was filled with memories, toasts and appreciation. As is the tradition, members of the sophomore class acted as the wait staff and were decked out in all black attire.

Students also received their copies of the yearbook, The Current. During the festivities, three faculty members were honored with The Current's dedication, Cum Amore and In Appreciation. This year's edition was dedicated to Head of School Lindy Williams. Head of the English Department and Yearbook Faculty Sponsor, Shannon Spears, was honored with the Cum Amore. And, Academic Dean ViAnn Farmer was recognized with In Appreciation.

Last night, we celebrate the accomplishments of those in our arts classes and afternoon activities. The Mezzanine was filled with beautiful artwork and our Gospel Choir performed as well. Thank you to our senior artists who have dedicated many hours to these causes, and to the K's for all they do!

Yesterday after class everyone met in the gym to start off the blue/grey competition with a couple volleyball games. Next, we made our way to the river lawn for a water balloon toss, Cheetos challenge, yarn spider web event, and a river race!

Last week, Oscar nominated filmmaker Bayley Silleck stopped by campus with the Friends of the Rappahannock to chat with students. Silleck, who has six IMAX films to his credit, and his production company, Blue Mountain Film Associates Inc., are working with the Friends of the Rappahannock to create the first known film about the Rappahannock River. The film will capture the river from its headwaters to the Chesapeake Bay. St. Margaret’s students discussed their perspective on the river and upcoming projects with Silleck and his crew.

After nine months of careful planning, execution and representing 100 percent student participation, St. Margaret’s “Peace on Earth” mural was dedicated on Sunday, May 25 at St. Timothy’s Church in Tappahannock. Members of the St. Margaret’s community gathered alongside several members of the Essex County community to dedicate the mural to the children of Tappahannock. In addition to St. Margaret’s students, faculty and staff, representatives from local government, educational, commercial and religious entities were on hand. Head of School Lindy Williams thanked the St. Timothy’s community for being a “church home” to several of our Catholic students. The collaboration also resulted in an unexpected honor when Pope Francis sent a blessing to St. Margaret’s School.

Yesterday, Bay Ecosystem Studies' students traveled to Fones Cliffs with Richard Moncure, Friends of the Rappahannock Lower Rappahannock River Keeper to explore the geography upriver.  Bald eagles, swallows, osprey, and blue heron flew overhead while at the cliffs, a recent source of debate due to a proposed development opposed by conservationists.  Other stops along the way included discussions about the recent spring rains and the flow of debris downriver at a volume not seen in many years, the traditional Native American art of weir net fishing, natural processes of erosion and sedimentation, as well as, the need to create living shoreline to restore nature's natural pollution filtering processes.
