On the Path to Becoming a Nurse Practitioner? Consider Being an LPN!

There are many paths to becoming a nurse practitioner. An LPN or a Licensed Practical Nurse is one option to look into, should you be considering a career as a Registered Nurse or an RN. This is because, compared to the period of four years it takes for one to become an RN, it takes 12 months to be a practical nursing diploma holder.

Causes of Nursing Shortage in the U.S.

The nursing shortage in the U.S. is projected to cause over 438,000 new RN jobs by 2026. This is an increase from 2.7 million jobs to 3.2 million from the previous years. Here are the key driving factors to this shortage:

• The aging population, which presents the two related issues of elderly Americans living longer due to medical advancement and the need for replacements for retiring RNs and other nursing professionals

• The lack of educational bandwidth to train new nurses, that is to say, the lack of nurse educators and faculty members who can train the new ones and the insufficient clinical sites, funding, and classroom space.

Where Do RNs Work?

This may seem like a no-brainer question—with the answer usually pointing to hospitals and other healthcare facilities. But contrary to this usual belief, RNs or Registered Nurses can work almost anywhere. Among the most uncommon ones are:

• Correctional Facilities

• Camps

• Places of Worship

• Airplanes/Helicopters

• Courts of Law
