"AnnuVadah," meaning the return of the annual floods, the latest entry in the ‪Future Dictionary of Water project. It seems only appropriate that I create this word & small painting during this record breaking month -- the wettest December in Oregon for 75 years, and the month is only 2/3 over at this point. We've had quite a bit of flooding this month in PDX, and I think that was true last year as well. As weather continues to become more extreme, will this be our "regular" weather pattern? #gouache   #colorpencil   #climatechange   #flooding   #futuredictionaryofwater   #blueheron

I belong to a loosely knit group of NW artists called NW Patternists, we all use a lot of patterning in our work. We're putting together an exhibit for March/2016 at PSU called Transference, sponsored by Mahaffey Fine Art. It will be an exhibit of watercolor monotypes. This is a 90 second video of Mark Mahaffey pulling one of my prints this morning. If you click over, there's more information on how the plate itself was created.

"Sinagua," now with correct spelling! This word and definition is submitted by +C.J. Shane for the #futuredictionaryofwater  project. We went back and forth a little on a clear definition, and decided on "a bioregion that had previously supported human life but has become unable to do so for the lack of water." Shane, feel free to correct or edit further. #gouache   #colorpencil   #climatechange

This is #1 of a planned series of 5 watercolor #monotypes, one for each of the 5 oceans. This one is "The Atlantic Bloom". I will be stitching the Water Carrier constellation (Aquarius) in the sky. Printed by Rae & Mark Mahaffey of Mahaffey Fine Art. This is how this worked -- I created the #mylar plates using watercolor pencils and Akua watercolor inks. I take my plates over to Mahaffey Fine Art, and they expertly pull the print! There are 2 parts to the mylar -- the circle in the middle, and the rectangular sheet w/ a cutout; both are laid down on the press bed and printed in 1 go. Thank you Rae & Mark!

Omizu -- sacred water. This word and definition was contributed by Catherine Alice Michaelis of May Day Press. This was actually one of the earliest submissions from an artist friend, but it took me a little while to come up with an image. I was looking for something to denote "sacred" without using existing religious imagery. It was only last week that I thought of the egg, both as a container of a little bit of water and something that holds the promise of new life...what can be more sacred than that? So here, something has already hatched out of the egg, and the shell now holds a night blooming datura flower. #futuredictionaryofwater   #gouache   #colorpencil   #sphinxmoth   #hawkmoth   #datura   #egg

Another entry from Martha Pfanschmidt, "illusieau," meaning "moist or wet air, but with little water actually soaking into the ground; the appearance of raininess without there actually being much rain." Thanks, Martha! #futuredictionaryofwater    #gouache   #colorpencil   #water

A new word for the Future Dictionary of Water -- "cistic," meaning "water hidden in underground cisterns that it can be used by the owner of the cistern but is unknown to neighbors or the public, secret water. Thanks to Martha Pfanschmidt for the submission.

Still undecided about the title, but this was inspired by the symbiotic relationship between ‪#‎hermitcrabs‬ and ‪#‎seaanemones‬, and the careful ways the crab tends to its helpmates. ‪#‎gouache‬ & ‪#‎colorpencils‬, 2015. The bottle gourd...I vaguely recall some childhood story about the microcosm inside a ‪#‎bottlegourd‬.
