"And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and the captive. 'We only feed you for Allah's sake, we desire from you neither reward nor thanks - surely we fear from our Lord a stern, distressful day.' Therefore Allah will guard them from the evil of that day and cause them to meet with ease and happiness." (Qur'an 76:8-11)

Jummuah mubarak!

Shahzeb was just six years old when we met him. He lives in the narrow streets of a slum, his home a dark concrete box. No carpet, no running water, no heating.

Shahzeb is an orphan. His father died four years ago from tuberculosis, leaving his mother Gulshan to raise Shahzeb and his five sisters alone.

“I can’t work with my hands; what can we do?” Gulshan has a disability that means she only has the use of one arm, leaving her unable to work. Her options are minimal: beg on the streets, or marry her children off young to ensure they are taken care of by someone else.

Shahzeb was found by Islamic Relief’s community liaison team and identified as someone in particular need of support. Support for Shahzeb will give him back his childhood and restore happiness to his family. You could be that change.

There are thousands of orphans like Shahzeb all over the globe who are in urgent need of support. Will you join us today in turning around a child's life? Will you sponsor our orphans?

Change a child's life today. Support #ourorphans:

Today is the National Day of Kosova! We're looking back at some of the great things we've been able to achieve together, to improve the lives of those in need in Kosova.
Hundreds of orphans are being supported in Kosova, Alhamdulillah! This means hundreds of children are more able to enjoy their childhood, go to school and attend camps and outings. We've also worked with orphans like Naim, who are leaving the orphans scheme, to provide them with skills and qualifications to help them find employment.
Naim was 1 of 8 people we trained as plumbers, and he is loving his job, which enables him to support his own family as well as giving back to the wider community.

In December, our Campaigns & Development Education Coordinator, Lotifa Begum, led a visit to Bangladesh with three of our volunteers. They were able to visit communities that have been affected by flood, and see some of the great work our teams are doing out there to prepare communities for the future. It gave them an insight to the growing damage caused by climate change, and inspired them to commit themselves to change.
For Lotifa, this trip was particularly valuable as it gave her the space to re-connect with her roots. Being of Bangladeshi origin, a lot of what she saw struck a chord. She blogs on the Huffington Post:
"I know relatives who have been killed by floods, and I had the opportunity to see close up the staggering impact of climate change. I also learned how easily we can prevent the situation from becoming more devastating through better preparation, and how costly and ineffective it is to intervene with emergency relief after disaster strikes.
Most significantly, I felt a strong sense of responsibility. Bangladesh is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, my motherland, yet man-made disasters, floods and cyclones are destroying it."

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon.
- To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.

On Wednesday morning, Deah Barakat (23), Yusor Mohammed Abu-Salha (21) and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha (19) were shot dead in their apartment in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, and make duaa Allah grants them beautiful patience and strength during this
difficult time, and reunites them in the highest levels of jannah.

Yesterday, thousands of people attended the funeral of the three students, and have been celebrating the great contributions they have made to their communities and the world at large. Deah, Yusor and Razan were active citizens, working hard to give back to their communities. They worked with a number of organisations including Islamic Relief USA, and will be very much missed.

It's International Women's Day this Sunday! To mark the occasion, we will be sharing stories of some of our most inspirational female aid workers and volunteers from the IR family all across the globe.

First stop... Canada!
Maria Ahmed is one of Charity Week Canada’s superstar founders and volunteers. She teaches Maths and English for grade 7’s and 8’s, and is currently on maternity leave with her beautiful 9-month-old daughter, Inaya.

Maria became one of the founding members of Charity Week Canada and has since worked tirelessly for the organisation, and helped manage the programme with energy, passion and motivation. She laid the groundwork for the organization and procedural protocol of finance for Charity Week Canada.

Maria tells us:

“I love my position for two key reasons. First of all, I find great satisfaction in tirelessly working to improve efficiency while simultaneously looking for new ways to decrease expenses. I also love knowing that I'm putting to use knowledge from some of the best professors of this nation on how to maximize revenue to one the most noble causes in this world: to help orphans and needy children.”

Shuheb Karim was one of three volunteers who visited Bangladesh in December to see the devastating impact of climate change, and the work IR is doing to rebuild and strengthen communities.

He shares his heart-felt thoughts in the first of three parts of his blog with us. He writes:

"During our visits, we encountered a number of beneficiaries, all resembling each other in their incredibly strong minded attitudes, the will to learn and more importantly the gratefulness and humble attitudes. While we live a life of comfort, with tough times being the absence of hot water from our boilers, these people’s entire lives were washed away. To be able to get back up with nothing takes something I doubt I’d be able to do. After all, “Allah gives his hardest battles, to his stronger soldiers.”"

It's fair trade fortnight! Over the next two weeks we'll be sharing stories of people benefiting from our fair trade projects across the globe. Fair trade guarantees producers a fair wage for their labour and good working conditions, making it valuable step in eradicating world poverty and hunger.
Haj Bashir in Palestine produces fair trade olive oil. Joining the fair trade movement hasn't only given him a better life, it has created a sense of community and brotherhood among the farmers, giving Haj lots of new friends! Haj has 8 children, and a total of 16 people in his immediate family. Thanks to fair trade, Haj is able to care for and support his family without relying on anybody else for help.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'oon.
- To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return.

With a heavy heart, we report the passing of our dear brother, Faisal Majeed earlier this week, from Islamic Relief Pakistan. Faisal passed away while on duty, preparing for distribution of tool kits the following day. He suffered a sudden heart attack, which he was unable to recover from.

Faisal was always working hard to support the needy, and was a very well respected member of his team. He is loved by many, and will be deeply missed. We ask that you make duaa for Faisal's family and those close to him during this particularly difficult time, especially his wife. May Allah grant the family patience and strength.

We make duaa that Allah grants Faisal the highest levels of jannah and forgives all his shortcomings.
