Happy birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! I just started reading "Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness" by Touré. Here is an excerpt that starts at the beginning of the book.

Janisse Ray is one of my favorite authors, and I recommend her books without hesitation. Anyone who has ever lived in or studied the natural history of the Southeast, and Georgia in particular, will instantly relate to the scenes she describes. Her narratives captivate me, and her descriptions of the Georgia landscape are both accurate and beautiful. If you live in the region, you love her because she praises your home; if not, you'll want to visit. She mixes the natural and cultural history of the Southeast in way that few others can, and her words expertly describe the strong sense of place that runs deep in the heart of southerners.

If you've never read any of her books, I recommend starting with Ecology of a Cracker Childhood. It's excellent. ... I'm really looking forward to reading Drifting Into Darien, her newest book.

The lengths people go to just to create the next great American story. -- And, yay, Flannery O'Connor! I love her.
