Long Beach finds difficult task bridging downtown to the waterfront

Although Long Beach has the benefit of a picturesque seaside setting, the city and waterfront are like two separate worlds.

It has been a couple of generations since Long Beach pushed its downtown shoreline south and filled it in to create a new waterfront, and consistently city leaders and residents have raised the questions, “Why isn’t it better?” and “How can we make it better?”

For charter school, new school year brings a new home in Westchester after controversy

After months of controversy and uncertainty over a proposal to split the school into two campuses, parents forged an arrangement with the St. Joan of Arc parish in Los Angeles so that all the kids could continue to go to school together in one location.

Principal Alison Kerr said almost all the parents will donate time, resources and tools, completely voluntarily, to help set up the school in its new location.

Mar Vista is the youngest of the Citizens of the World Charter group of schools, which work to teach social and emotional mindfulness in addition to the istandard curriculum.

For the two campaign rivals for Los Angeles County Sheriff, the differences in their campaigns are clear. While Jim McDonnell has continued racking up high-powered endorsements after receiving more than 49 percent of the vote in the June 3 primary, Paul Tanaka has seemingly gone underground. Consultants have left the campaign. His social networking sites have gone silent. One of his last appearances was in a courtroom.
