+Deutsche Bank marks its 40th anniversary in Belgium

Deutsche Bank began business in Belgium in Brussels and Antwerp, with both branches opening on August 16, 1978. In the beginning there were 50 employees – 32 in Brussels and 18 in Antwerp. Together the two locations constituted a so-called composite branch: the administrative departments were in Brussels, while all the sales-oriented departments were represented at both locations.

+Oxford University research: Men are better caregivers in later life than previous research suggests

Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study, the research carried out by Dr Langner of Oxford University* and Professor Frank Furstenberg of the University of Pennsylvania**, focused on 538 couples in Germany with an average age of 69, where one of them had developed the need for spousal care, between 2001-2015, and looked at how caregivers adjusted their hours in response to the new care need: whether directly responding to their physical needs or performing errands and housework.

Specialist regeneration developer and investor U+I appointed a member of Mayor of London’s new London Development Panel (LDP)

As a member of the LDP, U+I will have the opportunity to bid to develop a range of publicly-owned sites across London. It is expected the LDP will be used to procure and bring forward up to £20 billion worth of development land over the next four years. A total of 29 developers, housing associations and contractors have been announced as members of the London Development Panel, replacing the first London Development Panel, which expired in 2017. London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s draft London Plan identifies capacity for 65,000 new homes a year and the panel aims to support delivery of these homes across London by working with public bodies to bring forward land for development.

+University of Exeter: Plastic discovered in the stomach of a leatherback turtle found dead on a Cornish beach

The plastic did not kill the 1.8-metre turtle, but scientists say it is further evidence of widespread pollution – with plastic now found in “almost all” turtles examined.

The team that carried out the autopsy, from the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, believe the turtle might have been killed by a boat propeller.

The animal washed up at Marazion near Penzance after summer storms, and the Exeter researchers ask people using boats to be careful as more leatherbacks are likely to be in the waters off Cornwall.

Scientists seek to discover whether Scotland’s seas are a mating ground for basking sharks

These data have been gathered by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the +University of Exeter as part of a new camera tagging project launched earlier this month.

Basking sharks are the second-largest fish in the world, reaching lengths up to 10m. Despite their size and prevalence in Scotland’s seas, little is understood about their social behaviours.

“A large number of sharks appear each year just off the western coast of Scotland in the Sea of the Hebrides. However, there’s been limited research to show exactly what they’re doing here: do they come solely to feed on plankton, or are they courting each other and using our coast as a mating ground?” said Dr Suzanne Henderson, Policy and Advice Officer at SNH.
