Hear from survivors of the "nine days in May border battles" of the Vietnam War in a feature that aired Sunday, May 28, on CBS Sunday Morning.

Warren K. Wilkins, author of "Nine Days in May: The Battles of the 4th Infantry Division on the Cambodian Border, 1967," and our editor in chief, Adam C. Kane, attended the reunion for the fiftieth anniversary of the battle earlier this month.

After our editor in chief returned from the reunion, he wrote, "The idea first surfaced seven years ago, but it is a story that took fifty years to tell. During dinner, one of those in attendance told me, 'I didn’t think our story would ever be told. I didn’t think anyone cared.'"

CBS Sunday Morning finds out where these men are today, and Warren Wilkins tells their full story in "Nine Days in May."

The University of Oklahoma Press was saddened to learn of the murder of prominent journalist Javier Valdez Cárdenas on May 15, 2017, outside the office of Ríodoce, the newspaper he founded in Sinaloa, Mexico. When accepting an International Press Freedom award in 2011, Valdez Cárdenas said, “To do journalism is to walk on an invisible line drawn by the bad guys—who are in drug trafficking and in the government—in a field strewn with explosives.”

Javier Valdez Cárdenas spent many years exposing the complexities of the Mexican drug war and giving voice to the many ordinary people, both victims and perpetrators, caught up in its vicious circles. The Press is honored to have published in English translation one of his many books.
