A followup to my blog post on using tripods. (Have you seen it yet?) Do you carry your tripod equipment loose in your camera bag? I've found that it works better for me if I carry the tripod and it's equipment together in a dedicated bag. These photos show it closed and open with all the contents out on the floor. The only thing missing is the Really Right Stuff L-bracket. I leave that on my camera. I used to include a small flashlight-but my iPhone doubles as one, now. The bag is intentionally larger than my Gitzo tripod-it's even from a different tripod manufacturer... That allows room to include the equipment. What do you think? Do you carry it all in your camera bag or have another solution?

Bonus tip for your memory card:
If you use the same memory card on multiple cameras, be sure to format the card when you change cameras. Do this in the new camera. (But, remember, when you format it, all the photos on it will be erased, so download your photos before you do this!) This will help eliminate read/write errors on the card.

Quick photography tip: Do you erase your photos from the memory card in your camera or do you format the card instead? The best approach is to format the card and do it in your camera. If you only erase the photos, your memory card will slowly fill up. This is because each time you take a picture, the photo plus additional information is stored on the card. Erasing only removes the photo. Formatting removes all of it.

I wondered about those gorgeous long-exposure photos I was seeing on Instagram. This 2 year old post, found through Google, helps explain how to do it.

A wonderful job of creating dynamic foreground interest and balancing it with the movement in the sky. Really well done!
