I shared my very favorite summer reading with Anglotopia this week. What great British lit do you reach for when the weather warms?

If you happen to have any spare change lying about this weekend, I can't think of a more worthy use for it than this:

Seriously, as a post-Halloween treat to yourself, go read The Canterville Ghost. Warning: Like candy, it will probably give you a stomachache, but in this case from laughing...

"A Hobbit Slam, as it turns out, is neither a Tolkien-inspired spoken poetry competition nor a tennis tournament for short people." That might be my favorite sentence of all the sentences I've ever written. http://www.anglotopia.net/british-entertainment/british-movies/dennys-hobbit-menu-coming-soon/

"So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone."

Call me crazy, call me nuts, but I earned my journalism degree from an institution that instilled in me the importance of making the irrelevant relevant. I believe it is our solemnest duty in the profession. So if it seems like Americans don't know or care about 7/7, that is precisely why a tribute segment should and must be aired. Journalism doesn't exist to reinforce what we already know or care about. It exists to challenge and augment those things. Not to prevent questions, but to encourage them. And then, if we are very, very lucky, maybe even to answer them. But only sometimes, if we are very lucky.
