No attempts at insight on my part this week - just wanted to say this is really great stuff. Was enthralling

it's one thing for Pierpont to use money that he had earned based in no small part to this corruption to shore up the system. It's another to use tax dollars that are already stretched to bail out companies that had watered down consumer protections since LBJ. JPM definitely should not have been hailed a hero - it was his own self-interest. But everyone who weakened regulations protecting consumers AND banks from disaster needed to be thrown out - it's these sorts of protections, whether against foreign invasion or against financial chicanery that is at the core of a federal government, regardless of how one feels about state rights.

The two things that I find astounding about this:

1. How much our country has grown in population in 146 years. The House had only 161 members in 1868, yet has almost 3 times that now? I guess I haven't been tracking population growth rate change....

2. That you can measure the ROI of state acquisition. Could we do this for the Louisiana purchase? Are there comparables that could be made (what return could the US have gotten if it had invested the Alaska money in something else back in 1868)? What is beta for a state investment?

For a future article - would love to see anything you can find on the financial return of slavery.... Has anyone done an analysis of state revenues based on slavery? Tracked corporate investments back to free (enslaved) labor?

Brilliant as always, Cara....

Genuis again, Cara. All those insane folks hiding in public as poets. Next time we're both in NC, we should check out Schrank's letters.....

That first photograph is mesmerizing. Is she crying and hailing?

PS - it might help to have the URL to your site on your emails. I couldn't easily find it (though I'm sick as a dog, so maybe I'm just missing it)

There's so much that's insane about this post. I think you need to write the biography of Frank Holt/Eric Muenter - a quick search on Amazon brought up nothing....
