Some of our #digmontpelier archaeologists have returned to the North Dwelling to finish up work around the chimney base. Additionally, in the foreground you can see that the pier hole, discovered adjacent to the SW corner of the North Dwelling, has was appears to be a post mold in the bottom of it. How exciting! #archaeology #historicalarchaeology #thisplacematters #sitesofslavery #trustsites #savingplaces

Yesterday and today, our #digmontpelier team has been shooting in new units to our grid between the North Dwelling and South Kitchen in the South Yard using the total station. When we begin excavations in this area we will begin with doing every other unit, referred to as doing a checkerboard, to get an idea of the overall layout of the area. #archaeology #historicalarchaeology #totalstation #trustsites #sitesofslavery #thisplacematters #savingplaces

This early 1800s layer certainly had much to offer! We have not seen bones this large and well intact since the smokehouse excavations last year. This all came out of a yard space area south of the kitchen in the South Yard. #archaeology #historicalarchaeology #zooarchaeology #faunalremains #artifacts #historichomes #history #savingplaces #thisplacematters #sitesofslavery

One of our #digmontpelier archaeologists just found what we believe is part of a cat jaw while processing artifacts in the lab! It is an unusual find for us. We did find a dog burial near the southwest dwelling in 2011 indicating that both dogs and cats lived on the property. #archaeology #cats #dogs #bone #faunal

We got this locked down! This morning at #digmontpelier one of our metal detectorists, Dennis, found this pad lock in a survey area. This is one of the more complete locks found on the property. #thisplacematters #digva #historicsites #savingplaces #padlocks #historichomes #visitva #archaeology #sitesofslavery

One of our #digmontpelier archaeologists just found this while excavating in the yard space behind the South Kitchen! It appears to be a ceramic handle potentially to a teapot. Can you help us identify it? #southyard #ceramic #archaeology #digva

Today at #digmontpelier one of our expeditioners found a clay marble! This just reminds us that children once lived and played in the South Yard. #sitesofslavery #digva #visitva #savingplaces #thisplacematters #archaeology #historichomes #historicsites #historicmarbles #toys #historictoys

There are some moments at #digmontpelier were you can see the past and the present meeting. The cleaning of this mid-19th century toothbrush with a modern toothbrush exemplifies this. This toothbrush was likely once used by an enslaved laborer living in be South Yard. #archaeology #historicalarchaeology #sitesofslavery #thisplacematters #savingplaces #artifacts #toothbrush
