The Joy of Making Wood Inlay Banding

This woodworking video simply focuses on the joy of slicing the wood inlay banding log. It has taken some time and effort to cut, align, glue, and clamp all of the wood segments. Now, it is time to let it rip on the band saw.

Answers to common questions....The wood inlay banding is sliced to 3/32". A 1/2" WoodSlicer resaw band saw blade is used when ripping the veneer. The blue jig is a Rockler thin rip jig. (It has a roller bearing.)

The wood inlay pattern is inspired by a design the woodworker saw while visiting a medieval church in Rome, Italy. This design at the church is part of a complex marble floor of beautifully arranged marble segments. The marble style of work is known as Cosmati.

The compass rose wood inlay design is made using woods from the scrap bin.
Questions: What shop tool is used to safely cut the wood segments of the 2 inch compass rose?
How does a woodworker cut the segment angles to achieve tight fitting joints?

Here's a wood inlay practice run. This is a maple and walnut compass rose of 8 points. It is inlaid into a contrasting scrap piece of mahogany.

Inlay Banding Patterns & Miter Joints

When you have a wood inlay banding pattern and 4 miter joints (as in a picture frame), you want the inlay design to flow through the miters. This photo shows an initial step in how the inlay banding becomes mitered.

Careful sizing of the picture frame is required so that the inlay design of all 4 miters flow naturally.
