The compass rose wood inlay design is made using woods from the scrap bin.
Questions: What shop tool is used to safely cut the wood segments of the 2 inch compass rose?
How does a woodworker cut the segment angles to achieve tight fitting joints?

Without taking the time to watch the video, I'd say a bandsaw with a tapering sled. Then something like a shooting board or a flattening plate to smooth the joint surface.

Bandsaw Resawing

What method are you using to resaw veneer on the bandsaw? Are you able to obtain a uniform thickness for each veneer every time? If you would like to improve your bandsaw resawing skills, please read the following woodworking article which includes free how to videos.

Inlay Banding Patterns & Miter Joints

When you have a wood inlay banding pattern and 4 miter joints (as in a picture frame), you want the inlay design to flow through the miters. This photo shows an initial step in how the inlay banding becomes mitered.

Careful sizing of the picture frame is required so that the inlay design of all 4 miters flow naturally.

Make a Picture Frame with Diamond Wood Inlay Banding - Part 1

Watch and learn how to make a picture frame with diamond inlay banding. In Part 1 of this woodworking series the woodworker demonstrates of to use a mallet and a chisel to create the mortises of the decorative wooden pyramids. This hand tool work takes place at each miter joint of the picture frame. Once the mortises are made, the woodworker will then have a reference points of where the diamond wood inlay banding will begin and finish.

The wooden pyramids are not glued in at this time. They are only set in place temporarily so that the inlay banding can be accurately measured and fit. The inlay bandings are cut at the band saw and a controlled cut is made with the aid of a band saw cross cut sled. Each cut end of the inlay banding is sanded cleanly prior to be glued into place.

Once all the diamond inlay bandings are cut to length, they are then lightly sanded on their sides if need be so that a good, tight fit can be accomplished. White glue is then carefully applied to the underside of the banding and onto the dado. The inlay banding is now pressed into position. Cauls lined with clear, plastic packaging tape are then laid on each banding and tightly clamped until the glue has time to set.

Your comments are welcomed.

The Joy of Making Wood Inlay Banding

This woodworking video simply focuses on the joy of slicing the wood inlay banding log. It has taken some time and effort to cut, align, glue, and clamp all of the wood segments. Now, it is time to let it rip on the band saw.

Answers to common questions....The wood inlay banding is sliced to 3/32". A 1/2" WoodSlicer resaw band saw blade is used when ripping the veneer. The blue jig is a Rockler thin rip jig. (It has a roller bearing.)

The wood inlay pattern is inspired by a design the woodworker saw while visiting a medieval church in Rome, Italy. This design at the church is part of a complex marble floor of beautifully arranged marble segments. The marble style of work is known as Cosmati.

Here's a wood inlay practice run. This is a maple and walnut compass rose of 8 points. It is inlaid into a contrasting scrap piece of mahogany.

Introduction
Bob Simmons is the publisher and videographer of The Apprentice and The Journeyman, a woodworking blog featuring how-to articles and videos for the necessary skills and techniques in the craft of woodworking . His career as a trained woodworker/carpenter began in 1974 with a 2 year woodworking program at Ranken Technical Institute in St. Louis, Missouri. At the institute Bob studied woodworking theory and practiced hands on training. The training consisted of working with hand tools as well as industrial woodworking shop machinery.

In 1976 Bob began his 4 year apprenticeship as a union carpenter in St. Louis while working for the highly acclaimed, custom homebuilder, Higginbothen Bros. During his career, Bob also experienced working in a planing mill, in cabinet shops, and in high-rise office suites as a commercial finish carpenter.

In 1989 Bob traveled to Las Vegas, NV where he immediately began working at the Caesars Palace Casino. He went on to work at many other major casinos as well. In following years he spent time as a finish carpenter working in 5 star resorts in Kauai, Hawaii. His work also brought him to work in a major hotel in Los Angeles, CA and the Indian Wells Country Club and Resort in Indian Wells, CA. Bob then continued his work back in Las Vegas, NV where he makes his home today.

Bob's motivation for sharing woodworking skills and techniques is to give back to the woodworking community. Bob's contribution is dedicated to the memory of his outstanding, woodworking instructor, Mr, William Wagner and to all the professionals that he has worked with during his professional woodworking/carpentry career. .
