That's a lot of bass!

Alec (onstage but I think obscured from view) at bass camp at UNT. Bassists traveled from all over the world to participate. Alec traveled about a mile and a half. ;)

Awesomest bachelor party photo I've ever seen.

Here's the link to the relevant Reddit thread.

Okay. I just realize that's the only bachelor party photo I've ever seen, and I've only seen bachelor parties on TV and movies still, though. Awesome group portrait.

Timothy Leary, while fighting a thirty-year prison sentence for transporting marijuana from Mexico to the US, shares his overly optimistic and somewhat naive thoughts on psychotropics and what their role in society will be by the seventies or eighties.

Gives me pause to wonder about the prospects for biotech. If a successor to Google Glass or the Fit Bit were implemented as a subdermal cranial cap of stimulating electrodes, and an app could cause a non-external substance induced LSD-like euphoria and associated hyper-meditative state that would be switched off if any of a set of safeguard thresholds were crossed, would it be embraced by the market? Would it result in authentically increased self-awareness?

My favorite on-the-fly calculator is bc.  This is me calculating how many days it would take a CMDB discovery server farm, at an average and incredibly optimistic rate of five addresses fully discovered per second, and discovery running 24/7, to discovery all the addresses in the 10/8 and 172.16/12 RFC1918 netblocks.  Someone had proposed doing so.  I suspected they didn't grasp what the scope of their proposal was.

Great Ceasar's Ghost!!!

I feel a Lego freak out comin' on!!!

We just found out #LEGO hands are the perfect size for cables!! Minds blown. http://bit.ly/1oYdoD9

2Spinout sugru-ed this LEGO plate to his desk "Since I discovered this by accident it’s my way of organizing things. It’s not just that #sugru loves LEGO – LEGO loves sugru too. Sounds like a never ending love story!"

Cool video. How amazingly fortuitous the White House video crew just happened to be out there.

Awesome video of the President just taking a stroll in DC, interacting with people along the way.

Free, completely legitimate, FROM MICROSOFT Windows VMs from XP up.
I use an XP VM when I need a VM for nothing but RDP.  Here's the one command to pull down a fresh VM (which you'll need about every ninety days since the license lasts that long):

curl -O -L "http://www.modern.ie/vmdownload?platform=mac&virtPlatform=virtualbox&browserOS=IE8-WinXP&parts=2&filename=VMBuild_20131127/VirtualBox/IE8_WinXP/Mac/IE8.WinXP.For.MacVirtualBox.part{1.sfx,2.rar}"

Here's the link to get all the VMs you want:

Thanks Mister Bill!

Work
Occupation
I ride an hour and change on two train lines Monday through either Thursday or every other Friday to stand in a 5x7-foot cubicle and spend my time explaining how various IT resources are, could be, or should be monitor; if I'm lucky, I get to write software (scripts, Perl, bash, flirting with C, Dart, Java) to do the latter; I and my ADD brain struggle to not give equal timeslice to every phone call, conversation, and debate within fifty feet; I periodically lash myself to the mast in anticipation of the latest onslaught of how we can do without doing, or think without thinking while reminding myself that work isn't cooking the ocean -- it's more like camping: just try and leave the place better than you found it; I continuously look for the greatest number of intersections between the frequently contrary sets of choices known as what makes leadership happy, what makes team happy, what makes me happy, what seems best for Company, or customer, industry or the world. As one who has a mission, I struggle with those who have jobs or who seek to promote productthink over processthink or standardsthink. I seek to integrate with the wisdom of those I've met in my career who have mastered incremental change and consensus-building.
