Do You Have a Check Engine Light That’s On?
It’s not necessarily bad. Here’s what to do…

If you're not a mechanic - or mechanically inclined - when your car starts doing something "funny" or “different” it can be pretty scary. Sometimes, it's something to worry about - but maybe not.

How to know the difference? Here are a few commonly occurring problems that aren't big deals - usually - but have been know to make some people freak out.

The "check engine" light - Typically, this is a service reminder that illuminates when your car's computer senses a problem with the engine's emissions control system. While it's important to have a tech look at the car at some point in the near future (in addition to possibly producing higher-than-usual exhaust emissions, a fault in the system, if left uncorrected for too long could lead to more expensive repairs, eventually) it's not a "pull over now!" situation as long as there is no change in the way the vehicle operates or sounds. If the light should come on, you can keep on driving. Just make a mental note to have the car in for service when as soon as you can.

Caveat: If the "check engine" light is red rather than amber it could be something serious that requires immediate attention, such as low engine oil or low oil pressure. If the red light comes on, at minimum, you should stop as soon as it's safe to do so, open the hood and check the oil level and look for sign of overheating, such as steam coming out from around the radiator. Check your car's other instruments, too - especially the water temperature gauge, if so equipped.

Look in your vehicle's owner's manual to see precisely what the "check engine" light means for your specific car - and respond accordingly! Ideally, do this now, before the light comes on - so you'll know what to do (and how to react) when it does!

If you are still not sure about any light that comes on the dashboard don’t hesitate to give us a call and we’ll be happy to make a recommendation on what action you should take!

Simple Answers from Yeck's Tire & Auto in Bellevue: Transmission Service

Simple Answers Service Intervals

Question:
My friend just had a very major transmission repair in Omaha. How can Bellevue drivers like myself avoid transmission trouble?

Yeck's Tire & Auto Answer:
Next to your engine, your transmission is the most expensive component in your vehicle – so you and your fellow Bellevue drivers want to do all you can to avoid transmission repairs.

Bellevue drivers may have noticed a trend of engines becoming more and more powerful in recent years. At the same time, has been improving in nearly every motor vehicle segment in NE. More power and better have always been at odds. Some of the improvement in has been due to engine design, but most of the increases in can be credited to s' advances in transmission technology.

Every engine has a sweet spot in which it most efficiently makes power. This is often referred to by Bellevue technicians as the power band – the optimal engine speed (measured in revolutions per minute, or RPM). The computers that control what gear your automatic transmission is in try to keep it in the right gear in order to maintain optimal engine speed – whatever your Bellevue driving conditions may be. Modern automatic transmissions have anywhere between four and ten speeds. The more “speeds” your transmission has, the more time your engine can operate at peak efficiency. Needless to say, transmissions have become more sophisticated and .

Transmissions are cooled and lubricated by transmission fluid. This pressurized fluid is directed through small passages to effect gear changes. When transmission fluid gets old and contaminated, the small passages can become plugged which adversely affects shifts. The dirty fluid circulating in the transmission can eat away at gaskets and seals causing internal leaks that also hurt shifting. This is why some recommend that transmissions be serviced from time to time. The interval varies by vehicle, so check your owner's manual or with your friendly and knowledgeable Yeck's Tire & Auto service advisor about your transmission service recommendations.

Old, contaminated fluid is removed and new fluid is installed. Keeping up with the 's recommended service schedule helps prevent internal damage that may result in transmission rebuild. Let Yeck's Tire & Auto help you extend the life of your vehicle and prevent repairs with recommended preventive maintenance service.

Fuel Saving Tip: Tune Ups at Yeck's Tire & Auto

Have you ever gone to listen to an orchestra in Omaha? The musicians take the stage early and tune their instruments. Each individual instrument must be in tune, but the critical thing is for the entire orchestra to be in tune with each other. That's why they tune up together.

Now this is no surprise, I'm going to relate the orchestra to your car. Your vehicle engine has many component systems that each need to be working properly. And the components need to be working in sync, all timed up together in order for the engine to work efficiently.

At Yeck's Tire & Auto, we call this, ta da, a tune-up. When an orchestra's out of tune you get a bad concert. When your vehicle's out of tune you get bad performance and bad .

So check your owner's manual for your recommended tune-up schedule. Or ask your friendly and knowledgeable Yeck's Tire & Auto service advisor what he thinks. Just be careful not to say you want to make beautiful music together – that kinda makes us uncomfortable.

Disc Brakes - Serviced by: Yeck's Tire & Auto Repair | Bellevue, NE

Question:
What are the signs that I need a brake job?

Yeck's Tire & Auto Answer:
Signs of brake problems often fall into one of two categories for Bellevue : making noise or a pulsation in the brake pedal. Let's start with the noise.

Most brake pads have an audible brake wear indicator. This is a small piece of metal that rubs on your brake rotor when the brake pads are worn to the point they should be replaced. The noise is a chirp or soft squeal. This noise gives Bellevue residents enough warning to get their brakes serviced while there is still enough brake pad left to enable you to stop safely.

Bellevue residents who ignore the chirp find that the sound changes to a grinding noise. That is more serious. It means that the friction material on your brake pad is worn away and metal parts of the brake are grinding against the rotor when you press on the brakes. Obviously, this metal-on-metal means that your brakes aren't stopping very well. It also means that your rotor is being damaged. It may need to be resurfaced or even replaced.

Pedal pulsation is another noticeable . When your rotor is not in perfect alignment, it pushes against the brake pads unevenly as you apply the brakes. There could be a number of reasons for this. The rotor and wheel hub may not be mating well, causing the rotor to be spinning out of vertical alignment. This misalignment can be caused by either the rotor or the hub, or a combination of the two. If this persists, the rotor may even start to wear unevenly to the point that its thickness varies, causing an even more noticeable pulsation. This uneven mating of the brake pad and the rotor when braking means less contact and it will braking power.

Your service center or the team at Yeck's Tire & Auto in Bellevue can determine the cause of the misalignment and remedy the .

Either unusual brake noise or pedal pulsation are signs for Bellevue residents that there are brake problems. Bellevue residents should have a tech at Yeck's Tire & Auto their brakes thoroughly and recommend any steps necessary to correct the .

A regular brake inspection is on every vehicle's recommended list. Ask your friendly and knowledgeable Yeck's Tire & Auto service advisor if it's time for brake inspection.

ABS - Anti-Lock Brakes
Yeck's Tire & Auto Repair | Bellevue, Nebraska 68005

There’s a common misconception that Anti-Lock Brakes help you stop faster. That is not always the case on loose gravel or snowy surfaces. Anti-Lock Brakes, in fact, are designed to help you maintain control of your vehicle in an emergency braking situation.

Imagine you are driving on a snowy NE road. You need to slam on your brakes and your rear wheels lock up. Chances are good that the rear end of your vehicle will try to pass the front end and you can easily lose control. What would happen in the same circumstance if your front wheels locked up? Well you certainly would not be able to steer properly and your front end would go to wherever gravity leads it.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) modulates your brakes on and off as many as 15 times a second. This keeps your wheels from locking up while providing the greatest amount of braking possible. You are better able to steer your vehicle and maintain control. People often talk about the 3 S’s of Anti-Lock Brakes: Stomp – Stay – Steer. Stomp on the brake, Stay on the brake, and Steer normally.

Modern ABS utilizes a computer to receive information from sensors and control the anti-lock brakes. There are wheel speed sensors at each wheel reporting back to the computer, which can then decide when to activate the anti-lock brakes on the wheel or wheels in need.

So what affects how well the ABS works? First, the condition of your brakes: If your brakes are worn or not working properly, the ABS will not be able to do its job as effectively. A brake inspection from Yeck's Tire & Auto will let you know if your brake shoes/ pads are in good condition, if there are any mechanical brake problems and if your brake fluid and power brake system is in need of service. Proper brake fluid maintenance by Yeck's Tire & Auto helps keep the brake control module in good working order. There can also be problems with the various sensors and the wiring that sends the messages to and from the computer. And of course, your tires need to be in good condition in order to have enough traction to start, stop, and steer. Worn tires a big problem for ABS and Stability Control Systems.

The ABS is the foundation of Stability Control Systems, providing the information needed for stability control as well as to strategically brake a wheel when needed, so making sure your ABS is working well is very important. Also, the rolling diameter of your tires is one of the factors on which the computer uses to base anti-lock decisions. If you buy tires that are more than 3% larger or smaller than the tires that were installed at the factory, the ABS and Stability Control systems will not work properly. The pros at Yeck's Tire & Auto can recalibrate the computer for the new tire size so that the systems have the correct information.

When you start your vehicle, the ABS light will briefly illuminate on the dashboard. If the system detects a problem with itself, the light will stay on. That is your cue to take your vehicle to Yeck's Tire & Auto for an inspection to determine the problem. Yeck's Tire & Auto is your partner in keeping this important safety system operating as it should.

Alternator diagnostic testing & replacement service
Yeck's Tire & Auto of Bellevue, NE 68005

Your alternator makes electricity to start and run your engine and all of the electrical systems in your vehicle. That’s everything from the on-board computers to the turn signals. And of course there is the entertainment system, seat heaters, power windows, and everything you plug into the power outlets. After your alternator makes enough electricity to do all that, it recharges your battery with what’s left over.

When you constantly have a low or dead battery, the alternator is usually a prime suspect. However, the alternator is just one component of the starting/charging system and a problem with any of the other components could be the actual cause.

In addition to the alternator, the charging/starting system includes the battery, starter, serpentine belt system, and all of the electrical cables that connect them. Your Yeck's Tire & Auto technician has a systematic process of testing components and connections to get to the source of your problem. The initial symptoms determine where to begin the diagnostic process and he follows the procedure until he tracks down the culprit.

For example, Yeck's Tire & Auto diagnostic tests could reveal that the alternator is not generating enough electricity to keep the battery charged. Is the alternator bad? Not necessarily. A worn serpentine belt tensioner could be allowing the belt that spins the alternator to slip. So the perfectly good alternator is not spinning at the proper speed. The solution is replacing the serpentine belt system – not the alternator.

Fuel Saving Tip: Fuel System Cleaning at Yeck's Tire & Auto in Bellevue Nebraska

A lot of gas is wasted by Bellevue vehicles in dirty fuel delivery systems. Let's start at the tank. The gas tank gathers of dirt, rust and sediment over the years of driving around Omaha & Bellevue NE. That's why there's a fuel filter to clean the fuel after it leaves the tank. A dirty filter will rob the engine of the clean gas it needs to run efficiently.

The fuel intake components get coated with gum and varnish over time. This results in fuel being delivered inefficiently and some of that gunk getting into the engine. A fuel system service will leave your intake as clean as a whistle.

The big fuel thief is dirty fuel injectors. They deliver fuel to the engine at a specified pressure and in a particular spray pattern. When they're clogged, the fuel doesn't get atomized the way it's supposed to and doesn't get burned as efficiently.

See your owner's manual or ask your friendly and knowledgeable Yeck's Tire & Auto for when fuel system cleaning is recommended.

Tire Rotation and Balancing
Yeck's Tire & Auto, Bellevue Nebraska

Question:
How do I know when I should get my tires rotated and balanced?

Yeck's Tire & Auto Answer:
The interval for tire rotation could depend on a recommendation from either the tire manufacturer or the vehicle manufacturer. The background question for Bellevue drivers is why do tires need to be rotated?

Front tires wear differently than the rear tires because steering wears the shoulders faster up front. Rotating the position of the tires allows for more even wear among all the tires. Now the suspension set-up on certain vehicles may also affect the relative wear between the front and rear. There are several rotation patterns – your friendly and knowledgeable Yeck's Tire & Auto tire professional will see that you get the correct pattern for your particular vehicle.

Wheels and tires are not perfectly balanced due to slight variations in the manufacturing process and the placement of tire pressure monitoring sensors. So weights are strategically placed on the wheel to ensure that the tire spins true. When a wheel is out of balance it is essentially bouncing thousands of extra times every kilometer. Now this can result in an uncomfortable vibration for Bellevue drivers in the steering wheel or through the seat. An unbalanced tire will also wear quicker and it is for your shocks and struts.

Bellevue drivers should have their wheels balanced if they detect a vibration or uneven wear. A wheel balance check every year is a good idea. Because tires cost so much in the Omaha area, it's a great idea to do everything you can to make them last as long as possible. Proper tire inflation, regular tire rotation and wheel balancing are keys to long tire life. The team at Yeck's Tire & Auto in Bellevue can your tires for signs of uneven wear and diagnose and correct the problem. - See more at: http://yeckstireauto.mynapasa.com/2016/05/25/simple-answers-from-yeck-039-s-tire-amp-auto-for-bellevue-tire-rotation-and-balancing#sthash.gnkkZ9Q6.dpuf
