I also loved it!

Just saw Wreck-It Ralph. I gotta say, I was expecting it to be pretty good, and in my wheel house, but it far exceeded my expectations. Yes, there was the obligatory nostalgic/retro video game (8-bit pixel sets! Looks like Donkey Kong! Sugar Rush looks like Mario Kart!) set pieces, but the plot actually had a lot of depth! I think I cried like 3 times. It felt like old-school Pixar storytelling. Not surprising since it sounds like Pixar had quite a hand in it. It was a little bit Monsters Inc/Toy Story mixed with video games. A big brute of a main character and an adorable little dark-haired girl are the heart of the story (sully + boo), and the fun thought-experiment/gimmick is that video game characters "come alive" after the arcade closes (toys come alive when people aren't watching, and monsters have a whole life outside of scaring kids as their job).

One of the parts that made me cry was Wreck-It Ralph having to wreck something even though he didn't want to. For the greater good. The movie is about trying to be better than we are afraid we are, and that moment only confirmed to him that he could only be bad, could only destroy and not create. Call me cheesy, but that shit was real.
