I am retired and now spend my time writing. I have just finished the first two books in a series of Victorian Crime novels, based in Leicester. I love music, am very eclectic, but lean towards Blues, Bluesrock, Ballads. A self taught and average guitarist. One day I will find what I am meant to be!

Fortunately, I am not a man of overly nervous disposition.

Many moons ago, I set off into the wilderness, moving aside discarded piles of work in progress, and empty coffee mugs stuck to well worn coasters, mould forming in their dregs.

I left a little place that had been known as 'LAHK' to a select few, a place of joy and mirth, wit and repartees. The 'in' place...

It had been a busy little place, warm but welcoming, with a diverse set of residents, and global influence.

Last week I walked back through the doors.

The ghost of Todd Grundle had been left to welcome me, but little post it notes on some of his work left little clue as to who else had followed me into the wilderness.

Whispers soon brought responses from writers hiding in the shadows, cobwebs and dust masking them from prying eyes.

I called out, but few responded...

I cry out again.... "Where is everyone?'

Another coin in the jukebox and credit in the electrics...and I settle on a dusty chair, hoping for more ghosts of the past to make their presence known.

How does a self-published author measure success?

Earlier today, I took stock of how my self-published works are doing, in both Amazon and Kindle bestseller ranks.

Taken in consideration of the numbers of books on sale or freely available on the websites Amazon offer, they look to be doing pretty well, COMPARATIVELY.

35 million paperback titles
13.3 million hardback titles
489k audio books
4.8 million Kindle books, of which 317k are crime / thrillers

These are how my current books are performing as of 0830 today.
Amazon Bestseller Ranks;-

Reality is, in terms of royalties earned, I have no current control over US printing costs, and price per unit is set against US minimum pricing, for printed versions. Expensive to buy in the UK and highly unlikely to earn me much in the way of royalties.

For ebook format, with royalties at about £1 per unit sold, I am not going to get rich unless I sell in high volume, which is ambitious and probably highly unlikely, as yet.

So what do we do it for?

Is it because we like to write, or need to write?
Is it because we like the Kudos?
Is it, how do we feel seeing our books listed amongst the famous names that are earning a nice living from professional writing?

I have been struggling to come up with an answer, personally, and that has probably added to the delay, whilst book three gathered dust as I wandered around the writer's wilderness.

Come on guys, what is it that gets you writing and what are your long term ambitions?

Am I missing something?

Some time ago, members of this group offered their selves as potential characters - heroes, heroines or villains, in my latest book.

+Eibhlin Morey, +Chaunce Stanton, +Timothy Hurley may find characters or references they can relate to in 'Without fear or favour'.

I have been gentle, wherever possible...

Hi folks. Some of you may recall me, and some of you have joined since my last dalliances on this blog.

I would like to announce the release of the third novel in my 'Borough Boys' series of stories set in Victorian Leicester, England.

The latest is called 'Without Fear or Favour' and is set in 1852, coinciding with a General Election. It is a tale of honesty v dishonesty, paranoia, greed and ultimately betrayal.

The novel is available through Amazon, Createspace and Kindle in paperback and Kindle form, and should appear on my author page, shortly

Where is everyone? This was the home of a brave and rebellious bunch, who were cocking a snoop at other well known writers' forums, and we all seem to have dried up...

I must admit, I have tried to follow advice and reduce my time spent on social media and activity that takes me away from real writing, and I have achieved far greater progress.

However, the down side is I miss chewing the fat with buddies...

Let me know if you are still alive +Chaunce Stanton , +Timothy Hurley +Buzz Malone (excused honeymoon) +Karen Wyld (excused exciting endeavour) +Megan Denby  +Susann Fruendt +Jane Turley +Andrew Buckley  +The Ghost of Todd Grundle +Susan Rafferty ....and what are you writing?
